Financial Controller Industry:

$150,000–$200,000 Position Summary The Financial Controller oversees all financial functions of the organization, ensuring accurate reporting, robust internal controls, and fiscal discipline across all projects. This role is essential to effective project cost control, cash flow management, and long-term financial strategy within a construction-focused environment. Core Responsibilities Direct all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and fixed assets Produce timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements Manage job costing and project accounting to ensure precise monitoring of project performance Develop and maintain budgets, forecasts, and financial models, supporting both short- and long-term planning Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax laws, and construction-specific regulatory requirements Oversee cash flow planning, forecasting, working capital optimization, and banking relationships Design and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets Deliver financial analysis, insights, and recommendations to executive leadership to support strategic decisions Coordinate internal and external audits (financial and insurance) and address findings promptly Additional Responsibilities Support bid reviews and contract evaluations from a financial standpoint Partner with project managers to analyze cost variances and drive improved project profitability Oversee insurance, bonding, and overall risk management activities Lead efforts to improve financial systems, processes, and reporting efficiencies Coach, develop, and mentor accounting staff to build a high-performing finance team Assist with capital planning, including equipment acquisitions, investments, and financing decisions Monitor adherence to contractual financial requirements and reporting obligations Qualifications & Experience Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline required CPA and/or MBA preferred 7–10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including 3–5 years in a leadership role Prior experience in civil or utility construction strongly preferred Deep expertise in job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project-based financial management Thorough knowledge of GAAP and construction-specific accounting standards Hands-on experience with construction ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Viewpoint, Sage, or comparable platforms) Advanced financial modeling, forecasting, and analytical skills (Excel or similar tools) Demonstrated leadership, communication, and team development capabilities Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally with operations, project teams, and executive leadership Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Financial Reporting Accuracy & Timeliness:
Consistent on-time delivery of statements with minimal errors or audit adjustments
Cash Flow Management:
Improved cash position, reduced days sales outstanding (DSO), and efficient working capital utilization Budget vs.
Actual Performance:
Clear variance tracking within acceptable limits, with actionable insights and corrective recommendations
Compliance & Audit Outcomes:
Successful audits with no significant findings or compliance issues
Process Efficiency:
Reduction in manual work and cycle times through system and workflow enhancements
Team Effectiveness:
