$150k•200k Position Overview The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the company, ensuring accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and financial discipline across projects. This role plays a critical part in project cost management, cash flow optimization, and strategic financial planning within a construction environment.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities of Financial Controller:
Lead and manage all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and fixed assets Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements Oversee job costing and project accounting to ensure accurate tracking of construction project performance Develop and monitor company budgets, forecasts, and financial models, including long-term planning Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and industry-specific requirements. Manage cash flow, including forecasting, working capital optimization, and banking relationships Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets Provide financial insights and recommendations to senior leadership for strategic decision-making Coordinate audits (financial and insurance) and ensure timely resolution of findings
Secondary Duties & Responsibilities of Financial Controller:
Support bid pricing and contract reviews from a financial perspective Collaborate with project managers to analyze cost variances and improve profitability Oversee insurance, bonding, and risk management processes Improve and streamline financial systems, processes, and reporting tools Train and mentor accounting staff and promote continuous development Assist in evaluating capital investments, equipment purchases, and financing options Monitor compliance with contractual financial obligations and reporting requirements
Experience, Qualifications, and Education of Financial Controller:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required MBA and/or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designation preferred Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role Prior experience in civil construction or utility construction strongly preferred Demonstrated expertise in job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project-based financial management Strong knowledge of GAAP and construction-specific accounting practices Experience with ERP/accounting systems commonly used in construction (e.g., Viewpoint, Sage, or similar) Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, forecasting, and data analysis (Excel or similar tools) Proven leadership, communication, and team development skills Ability to work cross-functionally with operations, project management, and executive leadership Measures of Success (KPIs) of
