Job Description

For the 27/28 School Year The Director of Finance is responsible for the financial, operational, and administrative management of the school. This role ensures the effective stewardship of school resources while supporting the school's mission, values, and educational goals. The Director of Finance works closely with the Board, and external vendors to oversee budgeting, accounting, compliance, and operational systems for a JK-8 Jewish day school environment. Responsibilities and Duties This is a full-time, year-round position in a fast-paced school environment serving students from Junior Kindergarten through 8th grade. Occasional evening meetings and school events may be required. Financial Management Develop and manage the school's annual operating budget in collaboration with the Board Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, tuition collection, and cash flow management. Prepare monthly financial statements, forecasts, and reports for school leadership and the Board. Coordinate annual audits and maintain relationships with auditors, banks, and financial institutions. Monitor financial controls and ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and applicable regulations. Support tuition assistance and financial aid processes in partnership with admissions and leadership. Payroll Administer payroll and employee benefits programs. Enrollment & Administrative Support Collaborate with admissions and leadership regarding enrollment projections and retention planning. Support re-enrollment and tuition billing processes. Maintain operational systems (Veracross) and administrative procedures that improve efficiency and service. Board & Strategic Support Serve as a resource to the Board Finance Committees. Assist with strategic planning, long-range financial forecasting, and operational initiatives. Support fundraising and grant administration efforts as needed. Performs other duties as may be deemed necessary for the efficient operation of the department. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related field required; MBA or CPA preferred. Minimum of 3-5 years of business, finance, or operations management experience, preferably in an independent school or nonprofit setting. Strong knowledge of budgeting, accounting principles, payroll, and financial reporting. Experience with HR administration and operational management. Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills. Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion. Proficiency with financial management software and Microsoft Office/Google Workspace. Mission-driven and collaborative leader. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities. Commitment to professionalism, integrity, and customer service. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a Jewish day school or faith-based educational environment. Familiarity with nonprofit governance and independent school operations. Understanding of Jewish holidays, traditions, and school culture. The candidate chief financial officer should have a master's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 10+ years of progressively responsible experience. Should have experience in partnering with an executive team, and have a high level of written and oral communication skills. Preference will be given to candidates with an MBA in Finance and the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations. Salary based on experience.
