JOB SUMMARY
We're seeking an experienced Controller to lead our accounting operations, including month-end close, construction job costing and WIP, progress billing, union and certified payroll compliance, and tax reporting. You'll partner with project managers and leadership to deliver accurate financial reporting and analysis, strengthen internal controls, and continuously improve our processes. This role is ideal for a hands-on, detail-oriented accountant with construction industry experience who takes ownership and works independently.
Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:
Prepare and oversee timely and accurate monthly financial statements, account reconciliations, and month-end close Maintain the general ledger and ensure the accuracy and integrity of the trial balance Manage construction accounting processes, including job costing, WIP reporting, over/under billings, committed costs, and project profitability analysis Manage AIA/progress billing, retainage, change orders, and related project accounting processes Oversee accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and depreciation schedules Develop and analyze cash flow forecasts and assist with cash management Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance analysis Oversee payroll processing and compliance, including union payroll, union benefit reporting, dues, fringes, and other required remittances Oversee prevailing wage and certified payroll compliance when applicable, including Davis-Bacon and state prevailing wage requirements Oversee payroll tax filings, W-2s, 1099s, and other year-end reporting Manage sales and use tax compliance, filings, and related research across applicable jurisdictions Track and reconcile intercompany transactions Maintain and improve internal accounting controls, procedures, and documentation Review financial results for unusual activity, variances, errors, and opportunities for improvement Work closely with project managers, operations, payroll, HR, and other departments to resolve accounting and operational issues Provide management with meaningful financial reporting and analysis to support business decisions Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, efficiency, and accuracy Independently take accounting and compliance issues from identification through research, resolution, documentation, and implementation Perform other duties as assigned
What We're Looking For:
Construction Accounting Expertise:
Strong understanding of construction accounting, including job costing, progress billing, WIP, retainage, project profitability, and month-end financial reporting
Union Payroll Knowledge:
Experience with union payroll, fringe benefit reporting, payroll compliance, and collective bargaining agreement requirements preferred
Ownership & Accountability:
Takes responsibility for the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial information and follows issues through to resolution
Independent Problem Solving:
Able to research unfamiliar accounting, tax, payroll, or compliance issues and develop well-supported solutions with limited direction
Organization & Prioritization:
Effectively manages recurring deadlines, competing priorities, and unexpected issues while maintaining accuracy Attention to

Produces accurate and consistent financial information and identifies discrepancies before work is finalized

Job Requirements/Specifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience Construction accounting experience strongly preferred Controller, Accounting Manager, or other senior-level accounting experience preferred Experience with construction ERP or accounting systems; Foundation Software experience preferred Experience with union payroll and construction job costing strongly preferred Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong overall computer skills Ability to analyze financial information, identify discrepancies, and independently research and resolve issues Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills Ability to read, write, interpret, and clearly communicate instructions and financial information Ability to manage multiple priorities and recurring deadlines while remaining organized Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
Pay:
$90,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
