Senior Accountant Job Description:
The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing the company's accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, compliance, budgeting support, multi-entity accounting, and financial close processes. This role ensures accurate and timely financial information while strengthening operational and financial controls across the organization. The Controller plays a key leadership role in managing a complex, asset-intensive, multi-location environment involving fleet accounting, disposal operations, route profitability, cost accounting, capital expenditures, and regulatory compliance. This role will work closely with the VP of Accounting & Finance to improve financial processes, support strategic initiatives, and maintain the integrity of the company's financial statements.
Main Responsibilities:
Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules Oversee accounting for multiple business units, entities, and operating locations Analyze financial results and explain variances to budget and prior periods Ensure accuracy of balance sheet reconciliations and general ledger activity Provide leadership and oversight to AP, AR & other accounting staff Establish workflows, priorities, and performance expectations for accounting staff Improve accounting procedures and departmental efficiencies Maintain and strengthen internal accounting controls and financial policies Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax requirements, and company policies Develop and document accounting procedures and process controls Support compliance with banking covenants and lender reporting requirements Assist the VP of Accounting & Finance with annual budgeting and forecasting processes Develop and maintain cost accounting processes to improve visibility into operational profitability Assist in managing the sales tax compliance process for both New York State & Ontario, Canada. Analyze profitability by division, customer segment, and operating location Provide insights into cost control opportunities and margin improvement initiatives Support financial modeling and operational KPI reporting Maintain and improve documentation of financial procedures and risk controls. Lead initiatives to strengthen internal control environment and reduce exposure to financial and operational risks. Assist in compiling, tracking and evaluating insurance coverages and the financial implications of changing deductible thresholds.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required CPA strongly preferred 4+ years of progressive accounting experience Prior Controller or Assistant Controller experience preferred Experience with multi-entity and multi-currency accounting environments preferred Experience in waste management, transportation, logistics, construction, manufacturing, or other asset-intensive industries preferred Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and cost accounting principles Experience managing accounting teams and close processes Advanced ERP/accounting system experience required Strong Excel and financial analysis skills Benefits at
