The role includes evaluating loan product offerings and processes and implementing changes necessary for high performing results. It also involves coordinating VP, Lending works with information systems to obtain data to reach and exceed goals while creating efficiencies in processes. The position further supports lending operations by underwriting, approving, and closing loans as applicable, assisting loan staff and developing talent. The Director also maintains loan accounts including delinquency control, underwriting guidelines, and makes rate recommendations as applicable. The VP of Lending assists employees and all appropriate internal credit union partners. The role requires conducting daily business interactions and maintaining constant alignment with Michigan United Credit Union's mission, culture, and core values, encouraging others to do so as well. The Director demonstrates initiative and sound judgment in the absence of specific direction from management while supporting credit union goals and interests. It further requires passionately displaying a desire to build rapport and expand relationships with all members both internally and externally. The Director stays informed on Michigan United Credit Union's products and services to provide the right recommendations to the right members at the right time.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Responsible for sound decision making within the Loan Officer functions building and growing the loan portfolio and yield. Manages underwriting of consumer, home equity, and small dollar commercial lending. Responsible for the flow and processes of loans, focusing on accuracy, speed, and automation. Works daily within the scope of the Lending Policy and Process; approves and declines loan applications as necessary. Assists Processors and Loan Officers when necessary to maintain acceptable turnaround time and member service expectations. Ensures staff is well-trained, effective, and utilized optimally; provides leadership through clear objective setting, effective delegation, and open communication. Conducts meetings as needed to inform staff of policy, procedural, and legal updates. Discusses areas for improvement and identifies training needs. Develops and implements training programs, conducts training sessions, and facilitates cross-training where appropriate. Assists in performance appraisals and corrective actions when necessary. Demonstrates creative thinking skills by raising new marketing ideas and concepts for improving efficiency and generating new business. Works with staff on how to communicate with members to arrive at suitable repayment methods and schedules; and when necessary, communicate with members directly. Ensures proper maintenance of all areas under his/her supervision. Oversees implementation of new platforms and updates within programs as applicable. Manages the Indirect Loan program by building and maintaining dealer relationships, growing the portfolio in a sound manner, making recommendations for program changes and rate changes as applicable. Reports loan stats and performance, Score Card management and any other portfolio management needs using resources like Ncino, Sync1, and the core, keeping Executive team informed of progress. Leads loan project management and implementation of new products, services and platforms. Stays informed of regulatory, policy and procedural requirements to ensure compliance throughout the underwriting and credit administration processes. Keeps well informed as to market economic conditions as it relates to assessing credit risk. Ensures compliance with internal credit union consumer, mortgage and commercial loan policies, credit risk management policy and external regulatory requirements; documents any exceptions to policy and related rationale/mitigations. Works cooperatively in a team environment with other management and staff members while always maintaining a courteous and professional manner. Performs special assignments as requested by the SEVP, CEO or Board. Follows policy and procedures related to Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Customer Identification Program (CIP) and Customer Due Diligence (CDD) daily to ensure compliance with current regulations. Strictly adheres to MUCU organizational and operational policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned by management of the credit union.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree, or achievement of formal certifications recognized in the industry as equivalent to a bachelor's degree or work experience in the same field with positive results. Minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience, including underwriting of consumer and real estate loan applications in a financial institution, preferably a credit union. Requires strong knowledge of all applicable standards and practices along with State and Federal regulations. Required proven experience in credit management, portfolio management, and internal controls. 'Ability to read, analyze and interpret various documents, forms and reports. Ability to deal with complex problems involving multiple facets and variables in non-standardized situations. Excellent organization and time management skills with attention to detail and ability to multi-task. Ability to work without supervision while performing duties. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions, interpret documents, understand procedures, and speak clearly. Ability to meet strict deadlines. Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams with familiarity with AI tools. Strong skills in cost analysis, profitability analysis, ratio and trend analysis.
