Job Description

Controller — Multi-Entity Accounting & Compliance About the role We're a Jackson-based group of security operations and protective intelligence companies in a growth phase, with W-2 field operations expanding to nine states by the end of this year. Accounting has been managed externally as we've scaled; we're now building the function internally and hiring the person who will lead it. You'll own accounting across multiple affiliated entities, reporting directly to the CEO and working alongside the COO and executive leadership. This is a seat with real scope from day one — you'll shape the close process, the reporting cadence, and the systems, rather than inherit them. We use AI tools heavily across the business and expect this role to do the same. If you haven't used them professionally, you'll learn here. What matters is that you want to. If you want a well-defined role in a mature department, this isn't it. If you want to own a function and build it properly, read on. Discretion is a condition of the role Our clients are individuals and organizations under genuine threat. The detail that passes through accounting — who we protect, where our people are posted, when coverage changes — is the same detail someone planning harm would want. Handled carelessly, it puts people at risk. That is the standard this role is held to. The position carries a comprehensive background investigation and a binding confidentiality agreement. We are not describing a policy. We are describing why the policy exists. What you'll do Own the monthly close across multiple affiliated entities, including consolidation and intercompany allocations Maintain the general ledger in Xero; own chart of accounts and entity structure Manage AR and client invoicing, including contract billing against negotiated rates Oversee payroll through Gusto — reviewing registers for accuracy, managing state and local tax registrations across a rapidly expanding multi-state footprint, and ensuring withholding is correctly configured as we enter new jurisdictions Own cash management, forecasting, and financial reporting to ownership and investors Serve as the primary internal liaison to our outside CPA firm on entity tax returns-Build the internal controls, documentation, and process discipline the business needs at its current scale What we're looking for 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 in a controller, assistant controller, or senior accountant role Hands-on experience closing books for multiple legal entities , including intercompany transactions Experience with multi-state employment tax registration and compliance — you've registered an entity in a new state, and you understand that withholding jurisdiction depends on more than the address in the payroll system Daily hands-on ownership of a cloud general ledger — Xero, QuickBooks Online, or equivalent — as the person in the system, not reviewing someone else's work. We run Xero; strong QBO experience transfers well. Finalists complete a short practical exercise. Ability to work independently, escalate early, and tell ownership things they don't want to hear-CMA preferred; demonstrated capability weighs more heavily than the credential Nice to Have Experience in a multi-entity environment where business lines have distinct revenue models Experience supporting a company through rapid geographic expansion Comfort building your own solutions — scripts, automations, integrations between systems — without waiting on ITFamiliarity with local and municipal payroll taxes in states that impose them Experience working with outside investors or equity partners Compensation and benefits $85,000
