Job Description
Description We are looking for a Controller to lead the financial operations of a construction-focused organization in the Macomb Michigan area. This fully on-site position plays a central role in accounting leadership, payroll oversight, audit coordination, risk management, and financial planning. The person in this role will partner closely with executives to strengthen cash flow, protect company assets, and support the organization's ability to qualify for large-scale project opportunities.
Responsibilities:
Direct day-to-day accounting operations and provide leadership to a four-person finance team, ensuring accurate reporting and strong internal controls. Oversee payroll administration for approximately 100+ employees, including a large union workforce, while maintaining compliance with applicable wage and labor requirements. Manage banking and surety relationships to support financing needs, preserve liquidity, and expand bonding capacity for upcoming work. Lead monthly and annual financial reporting processes, delivering timely insights that help guide executive decision-making. Coordinate internal and external audits, prepare required documentation, and ensure a smooth review process across all financial areas. Administer subcontractor compliance activities, including required documentation review and adherence to lien law obligations. Supervise corporate insurance programs and monitor coverage to reduce risk exposure across the business. Use construction accounting best practices and systems such as Sage Intacct Construction to maintain reliable job cost and financial data. Identify opportunities to improve working capital performance and strengthen the company's overall financial position. Requirements - 5+ years of experience in a Controller or senior-level accounting leadership role. Strong background in construction accounting, including financial oversight in a project-based environment. Experience managing payroll for both salaried and union employees. Knowledge of banking relationships, surety programs, bonding requirements, and working capital management. Familiarity with subcontractor compliance, lien law administration, and corporate insurance oversight. Proficiency with Sage Intacct Construction is preferred. Demonstrated ability to lead audits, supervise accounting staff, and maintain accurate financial controls.
