Job Description
Assistant Controller Description Position Overview This Assistant Controller opportunity supports the Chief Accounting Officer and is responsible for leading the day-to-day accounting operations for a high-volume, multi-entity retail environment. This person will oversee core accounting functions, drive process improvements, support month-end and year-end close, and serve as a key leader across financial reporting, compliance, audit coordination, and team management. Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily accounting operations across financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, audit support, and tax compliance.
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, management reports, variance analysis, reconciliations, and closing entries.
- Oversee external financial and sales/use tax audits and serve as a primary point of contact for auditors.
- Provide hands-on leadership for a large accounting team, including mentoring, coaching, performance management, and prioritization of department workflows.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures, and written policies while identifying opportunities for process improvement.
- Partner cross-functionally with operations, purchasing, advertising, real estate, e-commerce, and store leadership to support business needs.
- Support periodic physical inventory activity and help standardize reporting tools, analytics, and templates for the broader accounting function.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership of accounting teams.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, reconciliations, and month-end close.
- Experience building and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Strong leadership, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with ERP systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including lookups, queries, and pivot tables. Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a retail or high-volume multi-location environment.
- Experience supporting tax compliance, external audit activity, and multi-state operations.
- Experience with data analysis, reporting tools, and process improvement initiatives.
- Ability to operate in a hands-on leadership role and balance strategic oversight with day-to-day execution.
