sporting goods manufacturing and recreational goods - About the Role Our client, a manufacturer in the outdoor/consumer products industry, is seeking an experienced Interim Operations Finance Controller to join their finance organization on an interim basis. This position has been added to provide immediate support for upcoming budgeting, planning, reporting, close, inventory, and compliance requirements. The consultant will work closely with operational leadership and finance stakeholders to support critical financial processes through year-end and the upcoming planning cycle. Job Description This role will play a key part in supporting the finance organization through a critical period of budgeting, planning, and year-end close activities. The consultant will step in to provide immediate, hands-on support across operational finance, inventory reporting, and compliance functions, partnering closely with both finance and operations teams to ensure continuity and drive process improvements. The consultant will support a broad range of operational finance activities, including: Budgeting & Planning Support budget development and financial planning activities beginning in early October. Own/support second-round budget adjustments, following the first budget pass presentation Assist with forecasting and ongoing financial planning activities. Financial Close & Reporting Support Monthly, Quarterly, and Year-End Close processes (MEC, QEC, and YEC). Prepare and analyze financial reports. Conduct mid-month P&L reviews with Operations. Provide financial analysis and insights to operational leadership. Inventory & Operations Finance Support inventory accounting and inventory management reporting. Provide operations-focused financial support to warehouse and operational teams. Analyze inventory-related financial data, reconciliations, and variances. Help identify opportunities to improve inventory reporting and financial processes. Audit & Compliance Support audit preparation and related requests. Assist with compliance-related financial activities. Current audits are expected to conclude in Q3, with the next audit cycle beginning in Q4. Critical Success Factors Quickly assume ownership of critical close activities and provide immediate support to the finance team. Successfully support the upcoming budget cycle, including second-round budget adjustments beginning in October. Strengthen inventory-related financial reporting and improve visibility into inventory performance. Partner effectively with Operations on financial reporting, analysis, and mid-month P&L reviews. Support audit and compliance requirements through the transition from the Q3 audit cycle into Q4. Identify and improve manual processes and reconciliations where opportunities exist. Provide knowledge transfer and training to existing team members. Help ensure a seamless transition through year-end close and the upcoming planning cycle.
Qualifications Required Qualifications:
Strong Operations Finance experience. Experience in a manufacturing, distribution, warehouse, or inventory-intensive environment. Significant experience with inventory management and related financial reporting. Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes. Audit and compliance experience. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently with minimal direction while collaborating effectively with operational and finance stakeholders. Ability to quickly learn the business and become productive in a fast-paced environment. Advanced Excel skills (Tier 2-3 level). Strong experience with financial reporting, analysis, and reconciliations. Comfortable working in an environment with a significant amount of manual processes and reconciliations. Ability to work with large data sets and identify trends, variances, and opportunities for process improvement.
