Job Description

Finance Director City of Williston, ND The City of Williston, North Dakota is seeking an accomplished and collaborative Finance Director to serve as its Chief Financial Officer and principal financial advisor to executive leadership and the City Commission. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a highly respected finance department, oversee the City's financial operations, and help guide the long-term fiscal sustainability of one of the nation's fastest-growing and most forward-thinking communities. Reporting directly to the City Administrator, the Finance Director oversees budgeting, accounting, treasury management, investments, debt administration, purchasing, financial reporting, utility billing, and statutory City Auditor responsibilities. The successful candidate will lead long-range financial planning, advise organizational leadership on fiscal policy and strategy, and continue advancing innovation, technology, and operational excellence throughout the department. The ideal candidate is an experienced municipal finance executive who combines exceptional technical expertise with strategic leadership and sound professional judgment. This person is collaborative and approachable leader who communicates complex financial information with clarity, serves as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and elected officials, and proactively develops innovative financial strategies. The successful candidate is committed to mentoring staff, fostering continuous improvement, and building upon an already strong financial organization while positioning the City for long-term success.
Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a closely related field
  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible governmental finance, accounting, budgeting, auditing, or public administration experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years in a supervisory or executive management role
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid North Dakota driver's license
  • Must be bondable The salary range for this position is $145,000-$165,000 annually, DOQ.
