Job Description

Assistant Controller Relentless Merch | Lincoln, NE Help Build the Financial Engine Behind a Company That Refuses to Stand Still. At Relentless, accounting isn't just about closing the books—it's about creating clarity, protecting the business, and giving leadership the financial insight needed to make smart decisions. We're looking for an Assistant Controller who wants more than a traditional accounting role. We want someone who takes ownership, enjoys improving processes, and has the confidence to lead one of the most important functions of our business. One of the biggest priorities for this position is owning our month-end close process. We're looking for someone who has successfully managed month-end close before and is ready to take full responsibility for ensuring our financials are accurate, complete, and delivered on time. You'll partner directly with executive leadership and help build a finance function that supports a fast-growing company. If you're someone who enjoys taking ownership, solving problems, and making a real impact, we'd love to meet you. What You'll Do As our Assistant Controller, you'll play a key leadership role within our Accounting & Finance team by owning the financial close process and helping build scalable accounting operations.
Responsibilities include:
Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process from start to finish. Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Maintain and reconcile the General Ledger. Perform balance sheet and bank reconciliations. Manage and oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable activities. Support payroll processing and payroll reconciliations. Prepare journal entries and maintain supporting documentation. Ensure financial records are accurate, organized, and audit-ready. Assist with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis. Support external CPAs with tax filings and annual audits. Develop and improve accounting procedures, internal controls, and financial workflows. Identify opportunities for automation and process improvements. Create financial reports and dashboards that help leadership make informed business decisions. Collaborate with Operations, HR, Payroll, and Executive Leadership on company initiatives. Help build scalable accounting systems as Relentless continues to grow. Your First Priorities Success in this role means taking ownership of the accounting function and becoming the person leadership can depend on for accurate financial reporting.
Your initial focus will include:
Taking full ownership of the month-end close process. Delivering accurate monthly financial statements on schedule. Ensuring every balance sheet account is reconciled monthly. Building a structured month-end close calendar and checklist. Improving accounting processes to increase efficiency and accuracy. Supporting budgeting, forecasting, and executive financial reporting. Creating scalable systems that will support the company's future growth. Who We're Looking For We're looking for someone who has confidence in their accounting abilities and enjoys owning the work—not waiting to be told what to do.
The ideal candidate:
Has successfully owned or played a significant role in month-end close. Takes pride in delivering accurate, reliable financial information. Naturally identifies ways to improve systems and processes. Thrives in a fast-paced, growing company. Is highly organized and detail-oriented. Can prioritize multiple deadlines without sacrificing quality. Communicates clearly with both accounting and non-accounting team members. Enjoys solving problems and building better processes. Wants to grow into a larger leadership role over time. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred. 3+ years of progressive accounting experience. Experience managing or owning month-end close. Strong understanding of GAAP. Experience preparing financial statements. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, formulas, financial analysis). Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, Xero, or similar ERP systems. Strong reconciliation, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Experience supporting audits and working with external accountants. Knowledge of accrual accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. Manufacturing, inventory, or cost accounting experience is a plus. CPA or CPA-track is a plus but not required. Why Relentless? We're building more than a merchandising company—we're building a team of people who genuinely care about doing great work together. When you join Relentless, you'll find: A leadership team that values your ideas and expertise. A role with real ownership and decision-making responsibility.
