Job Description

ABOUT CANOPY SOUTH
We are a nonprofit community development organization founded in 2019 to lead the holistic revitalization of 3 square miles in South Omaha. We believe every family deserves to thrive in a neighborhood full of opportunity. Guided by the Purpose Built Communities model, we focus on four pillars—mixed-income housing, cradle-to-career education, community vibrancy, and economic vitality—to create safe homes, strong schools, healthy spaces, and pathways to opportunity in South Omaha.
THE ROLE
The Controller is a hands-on finance leader responsible for both performing and managing the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of Canopy South. This role ensures accurate financial records, strong internal controls, and timely reporting. The role also coordinates with other staff members to ensure grant compliance, contract, and regulatory requirements. In addition to overseeing financial systems and processes, the Controller completes core accounting functions and works closely with the Executive Director, program staff, Board of Directors, and the Finance Committee to support mission delivery, accountability, and organizational sustainability. This position is well-suited for a detail-oriented nonprofit accounting professional who enjoys doing the work while also improving systems as the organization continues to grow and evolve.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Executive Director of Canopy South, the Controller will:
DAY-TO-DAY ACCOUNTING + FINANCIAL OPERATIONS
Perform routine accounting functions, including journal entries, account reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll transactions Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate coding across funds, programs, and grants Complete month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness Maintain monthly supporting schedules for all balance sheet accounts
FINANCIAL REPORTING + ANALYSIS
Prepare monthly financial statements and budget-to-actual reports Monitor and explain variances; proactively identify issues or risks Prepare financial materials for leadership, Board, and Finance Committee meetings Support budgeting and forecasting responsibilities with support from outsourced
CFO GRANT, CONTRACT + COMPLIANCE ACCOUNTING
Perform and oversee grant accounting, including expenditure tracking, and grant financial reporting Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local funding requirements, including Uniform Guidance where applicable Partner with program staff to support accurate, timely grant reporting and strong financial stewardship Monitor grant and program budgets and advise managers on adjustments
AUDIT, CONTROLS + PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
Coordinate annual financial audit, any required single audit activities, and agreed upon procedures Maintain strong internal controls and update financial policies and procedures as needed Prepare schedules and documentation for Form 990 and other regulatory filings Continuously improve accounting systems, files, and workflows to support organizational growth Given the nature of our organization, there will be other duties that are not listed above.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with significant nonprofit experience Demonstrated experience performing full-cycle nonprofit accounting and month-end close Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and grant compliance Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks or similar platforms High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently Strong communication skills and ability to explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders Ability to assess current financial processes and identify opportunities for increased efficiency, improved controls, and streamlined workflows Comfortable evaluating, adopting, and implementing new technologies to enhance financial operations and reporting Humility, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
