POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Financial Controller reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and plays a critical leadership role in managing the financial operations of a mission-driven nonprofit organization. This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of all financial activities, including accounting processes, budgeting, reporting, internal controls, and adherence to regulatory and funding requirements. The Financial Controller provides strategic financial guidance that supports the organization's long-term stability and mission impact.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
Financial Management and Reporting:
Lead all day-to-day financial operations, including general accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management. Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in full compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards. Develop and present clear financial reports and analysis for executive leadership, identifying performance trends and potential risks. Monitor cash flow and liquidity, providing proactive recommendations to strengthen financial health. Manage the preparation and filing of all required tax returns (including Form 990) and ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Budgeting and Financial Planning:
Track budget performance, analyze variances, and deliver actionable insights and recommendations to program leaders and management.. Support strategic planning efforts by offering financial analysis and advising on long-term financial goals.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
Implement and maintain robust internal controls and financial procedures to safeguard organizational assets and ensure compliance with donor restrictions. Monitor compliance with all donor and grant requirements, ensuring funds are used appropriately and reporting is in accordance with granter stipulations. Ensure compliance with financial regulations, auditing standards, and non-profit accounting principles.
Audit and Tax Filings:
Coordinate the annual audit process with external auditors, ensuring the organization meets all audit requirements and timelines. Prepare necessary documentation and workpapers for the audit and assist auditors in their review. Oversee timely filing of tax forms and other statutory filings (e.g., 990 forms, state filings, etc.) and ensure accuracy.
Financial Systems and Processes:
Oversee the implementation and maintenance of financial software and systems to ensure accurate, up-to-date financial records. ,, Continuously assess the financial system and processes, recommending improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy. Provide training and support to staff on financial policies, procedures, and systems.
Financial Analysis and Decision Support:
Conduct financial analysis and offer recommendations to improve cost efficiency, fund utilization, and financial performance. Work closely with program managers to assess the financial health of individual programs and make recommendations for budget adjustments. Provide financial insight to the Executive Director and Board of Directors to inform decision-making and support organizational strategy.
Team Leadership and Development:
Supervise, mentor, and develop the finance team, ensuring their professional growth and providing guidance as necessary. Promote a collaborative work environment and foster a culture of financial responsibility across the organization.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
Experience:
Minimum of 5 yr. work experience in accounting or finance, with at least 2 years in in a non-profit sector,
Licenses:
CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
Skills/Abilities:
Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial regulations, and compliance standards for non-profits. Ability to analyze complex financial data and present it in an understandable manner. Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior leadership, staff, and external stakeholders. High level of proficiency with Excel and financial reporting tools. Detail-oriented with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Integrity and transparency in all financial dealings. Strong commitment to the mission and values of the non-profit organization. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a proactive and solution-oriented approach.
