Job Description
The Controller is responsible for the oversight and integrity of the organization's financial operations, including balance sheet management, general ledger maintenance, and the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller leads day-to-day accounting functions and ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), federal and state regulations, and Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) requirements. This role plays a critical part in financial reporting, audit coordination, internal controls, and grant compliance, while supporting organizational strategy through financial analysis and leadership of the finance team.
Essential Functions:
Financial Management & Reporting Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll Ensure accurate and timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements Maintain balance sheet integrity and oversee account reconciliations Analyze financial data and present reports to leadership, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities Compliance & Internal Controls Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal, state, and FQHC regulatory requirements Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls and financial safeguards Monitor revenue, expenditures, and program budgets to ensure fiscal responsibility Audit & Budgeting Coordinate and manage all internal and external audits, including preparation of audit schedules and documentation Support the CFO in the annual budgeting and forecasting process Monitor financial performance against budget and analyze variances with actionable recommendations Grants & Program Accounting Oversee all grant-related financial activity, ensuring compliance with funding requirements Align expenditures with approved grant budgets and timelines Prepare and submit financial reports for government and funding agencies Leadership & Team Development Supervise and mentor accounting and purchasing staff Clarify roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations within the finance team Develop and implement training initiatives to strengthen team capabilities Foster a collaborative, accountable, and positive work environment Operational & Strategic Support Partner with leadership to support financial decision-making and strategic initiatives Continuously evaluate and improve financial processes and systems Non-Essential Functions Participate in cross-functional projects and organizational initiatives Support implementation of new financial systems or process improvements Attend meetings, trainings, and professional development activities as required Perform additional duties as assigned by the CFO Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; CPA and/or MBA strongly preferred Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, preferably within healthcare and/or FQHC environments Demonstrated experience in financial reporting, budgeting, audit coordination, and general ledger management Strong knowledge of GAAP and regulatory compliance requirements, including government grants management and reporting Proven experience managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and financial systems Advanced analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to present financial information to leadership Proficiency in ERP systems and Microsoft Office Suite Physical & Work Requirements Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential function. Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and via virtual platforms. Occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, bend, and lift up to 15 pounds. Visual acuity required for reviewing data and documentation on computer screens. Occasional travel may be required. May require attendance at off-site training, conferences, or webinars.
