Job Description
John Betlem Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electric is seeking a detail-oriented, analytical, and operationally focused Assistant Controller to join our leadership team. This role is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys looking beyond the numbers to understand business performance, improve processes, and support continued growth. Reporting directly to the Controller, the Assistant Controller will play a key role in managing daily accounting operations, maintaining financial accuracy, strengthening internal controls, and helping develop a high-performing accounting team. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, advanced analytical skills, and the ability to partner with operational leaders to drive business decisions. What You'll Do As the Assistant Controller, you will assist in leading and supporting: Month-end and year-end close processes General ledger maintenance, accuracy, and financial reporting Account reconciliations, prepaids, accruals, fixed assets, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cost accounting activities Preparation of monthly and annual financial statements Variance analysis and management reporting compared to budget and forecast Annual budgeting and ongoing financial forecasting Development and maintenance of internal controls, accounting procedures, and best practices Process improvement initiatives, workflow efficiencies, and system enhancements Training, mentoring, and supporting members of the accounting team Cross-functional collaboration with operational leaders to understand business performance and support data-driven decision-making Special projects and strategic finance initiatives as assigned What We're Looking For Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field 5 to 7 years of progressive accounting experience Previous supervisory, team lead, or mentoring experience Advanced Microsoft Excel skills Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting Experience with accounting software platforms such as Sage Intacct or similar ERP systems Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with experience reviewing large data sets for accuracy and discrepancies Excellent written and verbal communication skills Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines Preferred Qualifications Sage Intacct experience ServiceTitan experience Experience with automation, reporting tools, AI-enabled technologies, or process improvement initiatives Experience supporting operational or multi-location businesses Why Join John Betlem?
