Job Description

Controller Port of Cleveland United States, Ohio, Cleveland May 12, 2026 Position Summary The Controller is a key member of the Finance leadership team and plays a central role in the day-to-day financial management of the organization. This is a new position, designed to allow for depth, continuity leadership capacity, and stability within the organization's financial management team as the current Vice President & Controller approaches retirement. The position will report to the Vice President & Controller and collaborate closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), while adding responsibilities including two direct reports on the Finance team as the Controller gains experience. We anticipate this transfer to occur ratably and be completed within one year to eighteen months. The Controller exercises independent professional judgment and oversees complex accounting activities within a single enterprise fund operating under GASB full accrual standards and applicable public sector compliance requirements. Key Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Close Process o Oversee and actively participate in monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes. o Prepare, review, and ensure accuracy of financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards (e.g., GAAP, GASB). o Manage accounting operations, including general ledger, reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management. o Identify and implement process improvements. Audit Coordination & External Reporting o Serve as a primary point of contact with external auditors. o Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, workpapers, and draft audited financial statements for external review, including materials supporting the Single Audit (as applicable). o Coordinate responses to audit inquiries and assist with remediation of findings, as applicable. Grant & Regulatory Compliance o Oversee financial compliance for federal, state, and local grants, including allowable costs, reporting deadlines, and required documentation. o Coordinate grant-related financial reporting and provide guidance to program staff. Budgeting & Financial Planning o Support the Vice President & Controller and CFO in annual budget development, forecasting, and long-range financial planning. o Provide financial decision support to management through analysis and interpretation of budget and financial data. Supervision & Leadership o Provide oversight, mentorship, and technical guidance to senior accounting staff and other assigned finance personnel. o Review work products for accuracy and completeness and support staff development and cross-training. Qualifications o Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. o 8-10 years of progressive accounting experience in a public-sector environment, preferably involving a single enterprise or proprietary fund operating under GASB full-accrual standards. o Demonstrated experience with financial reporting, audits, internal controls, and regulatory compliance. o Prior supervisory or lead-level experience required. o
Preferred:
