Job Overview We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Controller to lead our accounting functions with energy and precision. This position offers an opportunity to take ownership of our financial reporting, strengthen accounting processes, and bring greater structure, accuracy, and consistency to the accounting function as our business continues to grow. The right person will combine strong technical accounting knowledge with a practical, hands-on approach and a willingness to work directly in the details. Position Summary This is a hands-on, player-coach role for an experienced, tech-fluent accounting professional who thrives on both operational execution and financial oversight. Because we do not have an intermediate accounting manager, the Controller will own both higher-level responsibilities, including cash flow forecasting, financial reporting, and tax compliance, and the daily execution of our accounting workflows, including closing the month, maintaining and cleaning up ledgers, reconciling accounts, and managing accounting systems. A firm requirement for this role is deep proficiency with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. The Controller will own, configure, and optimize Business Central to support the unique accounting needs of our business, including multi-year nursery inventory and fast-moving field service project costing. This role requires someone who is comfortable moving between the big picture and the details: identifying accounting and system issues, developing solutions, supporting accounting staff, and personally stepping into the work when needed to ensure it is completed accurately and on time.

Key Responsibilities ERP Optimization:

Own, configure, and maximize Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central across accounting, agricultural inventory management, and project/job tracking.

General Ledger & Daily Accounting:

Work directly in the day-to-day accounting function, including general ledger activity, journal entries, account reconciliations, payroll allocations, accounts receivable aging and collections, accounts payable, and other core accounting workflows.

Month-End Close & Financial Reporting:

Own and execute an accurate and timely monthly close process, including reconciliations, adjusting entries, account review, and preparation of GAAP-compliant financial statements for executive review.

Cost Accounting & Asset Tracking:

Develop and maintain system workflows to accurately track multi-year work-in-progress (WIP) valuation for growing nursery inventory alongside real-time project and job costing for field service operations.

Tax & Regulatory Compliance:

Manage applicable tax filings and accounting compliance requirements, including the Oregon Corporate Activity Tax (CAT), local payroll taxes, and other state, local, and agricultural requirements.

Cash Flow & Forecasting:

Develop and maintain rolling cash-flow forecasts to optimize working capital allocations and support operational needs and continued business growth.

Accounting Processes & Controls:

Evaluate existing accounting practices, identify gaps or inefficiencies, and implement practical processes and internal controls that improve accuracy, consistency, and accountability.

Accounting Staff Leadership:

Provide direction and support to accounting staff while remaining actively involved in the work. Establish clear expectations, review work for accuracy, help resolve accounting issues, and ensure responsibilities are completed accurately and on time.

Qualifications & Requirements Education:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CMA credential required.

Software Fluency:

Minimum 3+ years of direct, advanced administration or heavy operational experience inside Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Experience Tiers:

7-10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2-4 years operating in a hands-on manager, assistant controller, or controller capacity.

Industry Crossover :

Proven exposure to inventory-heavy businesses (agriculture, nurseries, manufacturing) AND project-based operations (construction, field services, contracting).

Mindset:

Extreme ownership attitude. Excitement to run transactional clean-up while building institutional systems.

Compensation Structure Base Salary:

$110,000 to $130,000 per year Potential performance bonus of up to 10% Benefits package including healthcare, PTO, 401(k) company match and tuition and professional development reimbursement
