Full Job Description Corporate Controller Company:
Mohawk Metal Company Location:
Eugene, Oregon preferred; Vancouver, Washington considered
Position:
Full-Time, In-House Reports To:
President/CEO Department:
Accounting & Finance Position Summary Mohawk Metal Company is seeking an experienced Corporate Controller to lead the company's accounting and financial-control functions. This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing the monthly close, overseeing cash flow and working capital, strengthening accounting controls, and providing management with timely and useful financial information. The Corporate Controller will work closely with the President/CEO, COO, Accounting Manager, and other members of management. The position requires someone who can operate at both the controller and working-accountant level: capable of analyzing the company's financial position and advising management while also understanding the transactions, reconciliations, systems, and processes underlying the financial statements. The successful candidate will receive transition and knowledge-transfer support from Mohawk's retiring Controller, Terry Dank, including established accounting practices, reporting procedures, historical knowledge, and company-specific accounting considerations. Primary Responsibilities Financial Reporting and Month-End Close Lead and maintain an accurate and timely monthly and year-end closing process. Prepare and review monthly financial statements, including balance sheet, income statement, cash flow information, and supporting schedules. Review general ledger activity and ensure accounts are properly reconciled and supported. Prepare and review month-end journal entries, accruals, adjustments, and account reconciliations. Reconcile inventory to the general ledger and investigate discrepancies. Maintain accurate accounting for fixed assets, liabilities, debt, prepaid expenses, accruals, and other balance-sheet accounts. Identify unusual financial activity, accounting errors, emerging trends, and areas requiring management attention. Provide clear financial explanations to ownership and operating management. Cash Flow and Working Capital Management Maintain accurate visibility into the company's daily and projected cash position. Monitor bank balances, outstanding checks, incoming customer payments, payroll obligations, taxes, accounts payable, and other cash requirements. Develop and maintain short-term cash-flow forecasts. Assist management in determining the timing and priority of cash disbursements when working-capital constraints exist. Monitor working-capital trends and identify opportunities to improve cash conversion. Maintain strong banking relationships and provide financial information required by lenders and financial institutions. Accounts Receivable and Credit Management Provide management oversight of accounts receivable and collections. Review AR aging and identify delinquent, high-risk, and material customer balances. Participate directly in collection efforts and major-account issues when escalation is required. Evaluate customer credit exposure and make recommendations concerning credit limits, payment arrangements, shipment holds, and other credit-control measures. Track customer payment commitments and significant expected cash receipts. Coordinate with sales, project management, and accounting personnel regarding customer payment and credit issues. Support accurate external credit reporting when required. Accounts Payable and Vendor Management Provide financial oversight of accounts payable and vendor payment practices. Review AP aging, upcoming obligations, and significant vendor balances. Coordinate payment priorities with management based on cash availability, operational requirements, vendor relationships, and credit considerations. Assist in resolving significant vendor-credit issues. Maintain appropriate financial controls over invoice processing, payment authorization, and disbursements. Work closely with purchasing and operations where vendor credit or payment issues could affect production. Payroll, Taxes, and Regulatory Accounting Oversee accounting associated with payroll, payroll liabilities, payroll taxes, employee benefits, and 401(k) obligations. Review and/or prepare payroll-related journal entries and reconciliations. Coordinate required federal, state, and local tax reporting and payments. Support Washington and Oregon tax requirements applicable to company operations. Coordinate with outside accountants, tax professionals, insurance providers, banks, auditors, and other financial partners as necessary. Maintain appropriate documentation and financial records to support tax filings, audits, insurance reviews, and other compliance requirements. Cost Accounting, Inventory, and Manufacturing Finance Maintain and improve accounting processes appropriate for a custom metal fabrication and manufacturing environment. Monitor inventory accounting and reconcile physical and accounting records. Review material, labor, outside-processing, overhead, and other manufacturing costs for reasonableness and accuracy. Assist management in understanding job profitability, gross margin, overhead absorption, and operational financial performance. Work with operations and estimating personnel to improve the quality of cost information used for business decisions. Identify material financial variances and investigate their underlying operational causes. Internal Controls and Accounting Systems Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, documentation, and internal controls. Establish appropriate separation of duties and authorization controls while recognizing the practical requirements of a privately held company. Ensure financial transactions are accurately recorded and adequately supported. Identify opportunities to simplify, automate, and improve accounting processes without compromising financial controls. Maintain strong working knowledge of the company's ERP and accounting systems, including M1 ERP and related financial reporting tools. Participate in the continued development of accounting automation and AI-assisted financial processes while maintaining appropriate human review and financial controls. Executive and Management Support Serve as the company's senior internal accounting and financial-control resource. Provide the President/CEO and COO with timely, concise financial analysis and recommendations. Prepare recurring executive reporting covering cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, profitability, working capital, and other significant financial matters. Identify financial risks before they become significant operational problems. Translate accounting information into practical business information that management can act upon. Assist with budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, capital expenditures, financing decisions, and other strategic financial matters. Support management in evaluating major customers, vendors, projects, investments, and business decisions from a financial perspective. Leadership Responsibilities The Corporate Controller will provide financial leadership to Mohawk's accounting function and work closely with existing accounting personnel.
Responsibilities include:
Establishing clear accounting processes, responsibilities, and deadlines. Reviewing work performed by accounting staff and providing appropriate guidance. Developing the accounting team's capabilities and reducing dependence on undocumented institutional knowledge. Maintaining written procedures for critical accounting and financial processes. Creating an effective cross-training and backup structure for essential accounting functions. Maintaining a professional, service-oriented relationship between accounting and operations. 401(k) fiduciary responsibility. Human Resources basic rules. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field, or equivalent demonstrated professional experience. Significant progressive accounting experience, including controller-level or senior accounting responsibilities. Strong knowledge of GAAP and fundamental accounting controls. Demonstrated experience preparing and analyzing financial statements. Strong general-ledger and balance-sheet reconciliation experience. Experience managing cash flow, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and working capital. Experience with month-end and year-end closing processes. Strong Excel and financial-analysis skills. Ability to independently investigate financial discrepancies and determine root causes. Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-accounting executives and operating managers. High level of accuracy, judgment, confidentiality, and personal accountability. Preferred CPA, CMA, or equivalent advanced accounting credentials. Controller experience within manufacturing, fabrication, construction, or another job-costing environment. Experience with manufacturing ERP systems and job-cost accounting. Experience with M1 ERP preferred. Experience with inventory accounting and manufacturing cost analysis. Experience working within a privately held, owner-managed business. Experience improving accounting systems, reporting processes, automation, and internal controls. Characteristics of the Successful Candidate Mohawk is looking for a Controller who: Is hands-on and willing to work directly with the underlying accounting information. Understands that accurate cash information is as important as accurate financial statements. Investigates discrepancies rather than simply reporting them. Can distinguish between an accounting issue and the operational issue causing it. Communicates problems early and brings potential solutions with them. Can work effectively with ownership, operations, accounting staff, customers, vendors, banks, and outside professionals. Is comfortable operating in a fast-moving manufacturing environment where priorities can change quickly. Builds systems and documentation so critical financial knowledge resides within the company rather than with one individual. Familiarity with AI based accounting and supporting the development of AI accounting within the corporate environment. Initial Transition Priorities During the initial transition period, the Corporate Controller will work directly with retiring Controller Terry Dank and Mohawk's accounting and management teams to: Complete a structured transfer of Terry's accounting and financial responsibilities. Document recurring daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual controller responsibilities. Capture company-specific accounting practices and institutional knowledge. Review month-end and year-end closing procedures. Review cash-management and forecasting processes. Review AR collection, customer-credit, and AP payment-management procedures. Review payroll, tax, banking, inventory, and general-ledger processes. Review financial reporting provided to ownership and management. Identify accounting processes dependent upon undocumented knowledge or a single individual. Establish a sustainable internal controller function before completion of the transition. Position Objective The objective of the Corporate Controller position is not simply to maintain Mohawk's accounting records. The Controller is expected to provide Mohawk's ownership and management team with reliable financial information, strong financial controls, disciplined cash and working-capital management, and the financial insight necessary to operate and grow the company profitably.
