Job Description

Job Title:
Controller Job Description The Controller oversees all accounting operations for a growing architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) organization. This hands-on role leads project accounting, month-end close, financial reporting, and US GAAP compliance, with a strong focus on Deltek ERP (Vision and/or Vantagepoint). The Controller partners closely with Project Managers and firm leadership to deliver accurate, timely, and actionable financial information that supports sound business decisions. Responsibilities Lead and manage the full month-end close process, ensuring timely, accurate, and complete financial reporting. Oversee project accounting activities, including work-in-progress (WIP), job cost tracking, revenue recognition, and billing for professional services projects. Prepare, review, and present monthly financial statements in accordance with US GAAP. Maintain, reconcile, and analyze balance sheet and income statement accounts to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data. Act as the subject matter expert for Deltek ERP, including Vision and/or Vantagepoint, and optimize its use for project and corporate accounting. Review and analyze project financials, clearly communicating results, trends, and risks to Project Managers and firm leadership. Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies, variances, and reporting issues in a timely and thorough manner. Establish, maintain, and improve internal controls and review processes to safeguard financial data and ensure compliance. Support leadership with financial insights, forecasting, analysis, and decision-making support. Drive continuous improvement of accounting processes, procedures, and documentation to enhance efficiency and accuracy. Partner cross-functionally to support a professional, service-oriented environment that aligns finance with broader business goals. Collaborate with HR and benefits stakeholders on financial reporting related to benefits management, audits, and other HR-related financial activities, as needed. Essential Skills 5+ years of progressive accounting experience. Proven experience leading and executing month-end close processes. Strong background in account reconciliations across balance sheet and income statement accounts. Demonstrated experience in financial reporting and preparation of financial statements. Solid knowledge and practical application of US GAAP. Hands-on experience with Deltek ERP, specifically Vision and/or Vantagepoint. Experience with general ledger accounting, journal entries, and financial data integrity. Ability to perform forecasting and provide financial insights to support decision-making. Initiative and strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve complex accounting issues. Personable and professional demeanor with a strong customer service orientation. High level of attention to detail and accuracy in all financial work. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in an architecture, engineering, construction, or similar professional services environment. Exposure to benefits management and HR-related financial activities. Experience with HR benefits brokerage and related financial reporting is preferred but not required. Experience with 401(k) reporting and related compliance is preferred but not required. background in audit support or participation in financial audits. Ability to build strong cross-functional relationships with project teams and leadership. Continuous improvement mindset focused on enhancing processes and controls. Work Environment This is an in-office role based in the Pearl District in downtown Portland (PDX), working on-site five days per week. The environment is professional and customer-service oriented, with close collaboration between finance, project teams, and leadership. The role is suited to someone who thrives in a dynamic, growing professional services organization and is comfortable working hands-on with ERP systems and project financials in a traditional office setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portland, OR. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $48.08 - $52.88/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
