Exempt General Description/Position Summary:
The Controller position is responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities that assists with the advancement of the St. Louis Area Foodbank's mission. The Controller will lead the daily finance operations and manage the accounting team members including functional responsibility for all the general ledger activities, contractual compliance, and grant reporting. The Controller will assist the CFO in ensuring that appropriate systems and procedures are established and maintained to support effective program implementation. The Controller will work closely with program leaders and staff to educate the organization on accounting procedures as well as explore ways the finance function can best support program operations. Additionally, the Controller will support leadership in developing strategies to enhance and better integrate the various organizational systems (Inventory, HR, Technology Services, and Finance). The Controller ensures that all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems comply with appropriateU.S. GAAP
standards and regulatory requirements.Duties and Responsibilities:
Keep the Chief Financial Officer apprised of daily operations and communicate any problems or issues in a timely manner with proposed solutions. Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriateU.S. GAAP
standards and regulatory requirements: o manage the annual time study and implement the results o update the cost allocation methodologies o ensure appropriate reconciliation between the CERES inventory sub-ledger and the accounting general ledger inventory accounts o ensure appropriate and timely revenue and expense recognition in significant general ledger accounts such as Food Donations and Food Distributions o monitor the financial impact of inventory cycle counts and other inventory adjustments o ensure balance sheet and key profit and loss accounts are reconciled for analysis and management reporting and resolve reconciling transactions and discrepancies where necessary Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures. o review risk areas and develop appropriate corrective action plans o test to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of corrections Coordinate all audit activity and gather 990 information. o ensure annual audit renders an unmodified (clean) opinion and no substantive errors are discovered o assist with external audits, including preparation of client-prepared schedules, reconciliations, audit confirmations, and other required information Consistently analyze financial data and present accurate and timely financial: o clearly communicate financial statement information o monitor financial progress and changes o inform leadership of new or unusual trends o update budget forecast when appropriate Assist with the annual budgeting and planning process: o administer and review all financial plans o collaborate with key leaders to perform monthly budget vs. actual variance analysis, identify the root cause(s) of all significant variances, and develop, implement, and monitor appropriate corrective action plans to ensure compliance to the approved Board and/or Funder budget Support the CFO in engaging the board's audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery. Oversee financial, project/program and grants accounting: o ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/contractual period o gather financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants o maintain an appropriate Chart of Accounts o maintain current written desk top procedures for all core responsibilities, including but not limited to, accounting closing procedures, generating monthly financial statements, government grant reporting, etc. Lead Finance team and leverage strengths of the Finance team members: o hire, train, supervise and evaluate departmental staff related to core responsibilities o clarify roles and responsibilities o identify, develop and/or implement career enhancing training programs to help each team member maximize individual and organizational goals Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization. Create and promote a positive and supportive work environment. Update all Accounting Policies and Procedures, as needed, but at least annually. Provide strategic direction for all payroll and labor collection activities. o monitor changes in applicable laws and ensure compliance o coordinate or process payroll timely and accurately o ensure all required payroll tax returns and regulatory filings are filed accurately and timely Perform other appropriate duties as assigned.Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting required CPA preferred Seasoned leader with 7 to 10 years of accounting and finance experience; ideally in a complex non-profit organization Proactive, hand-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CFO the responsibility for the financial health of the organization Prior people management/direct supervisory experience required Solid experience coordinating audit activities, managing grant reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments and inventory Passion for the Foodbank mission and the ability to demonstrateSLAFB's Core Values:

- Monday - Friday onsite at the SLAFB facility and in the community as needed
- However, flexibility will be granted as appropriate in accordance with the SLAFB's Remote Work Policy
- Occasional weekend (Saturday/Sunday) or evening hours may be required
- Meeting attendance may require overnight travel
