Controller Jaffa Management Clifton, NJ Job Details Full-time $150,000 - $225,000 a year 8 hours ago Benefits Health insurance 401(k) Paid time off 401(k) matching Qualifications Financial close processing CPA Expense management Managing accounting teams Accounting and finance experience Insurance law Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) Senior leadership Stakeholder management Full Job Description Job Overview We are seeking a senior, hands-on Controller to lead accounting, reporting, controls, audit, and tax coordination for a complex, multi-entity business.
This is an execution-focused role:
the Controller will run the accounting and reporting process end to end, manage key outside relationships, and bring clear analysis and recommendations forward to the CFO and senior management. This is a high ownership role for someone who wants to build and run a strong accounting function within a growing institutional platform. The Controller will manage a small internal team and outside providers, work directly in the details, and serve as a reliable operating resource on what is happening across the business. As the company grows, the Controller will have the opportunity to build the team and infrastructure needed to support a larger and more complex platform. We are looking for someone with strong technical accounting depth and an analytical mindset, able to ensure the numbers are right, understand what they mean, identify important trends or issues, and communicate clearly about them. Duties Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes across the management company, funds, and affiliated reinsurance entities. Oversee accounts payable, expense allocations, intercompany activity, cash activity, and entity-level accounting. Review reconciliations, allocations, accruals, financial statements, and supporting schedules for accuracy, completeness, and appropriate treatment. Maintain and strengthen accounting policies, documentation, and internal controls. Coordinate recurring financial reporting across the management company, funds, insurance and reinsurance structures, trusts, and related entities. Own day-to-day relationships with auditors, tax providers, fund administrators, banks, brokers, vendors, and other external partners. Coordinate annual audits, tax returns, regulatory reporting, and other external reporting processes. Establish timelines, assign responsibility, and keep deliverables on schedule. Prepare financial statements and variance analysis with clear commentary on results, flagging items that need CFO attention. Maintain visibility into entity-level cash activity and reconcile cash positions across the platform. Manage, review, and develop the internal accounting team. The role will initially oversee a small team and must remain hands-on as the function grows. Identify and implement practical improvements to accounting processes, reporting, controls, and systems. Communicate clearly with senior management and external stakeholders, surface issues early, and bring forward practical recommendations. What We're Looking For At least 10 years of progressive accounting and controllership experience, including meaningful responsibility as a Controller or comparable senior accounting leader. Strong technical accounting knowledge and sound judgment reviewing financial statements, reconciliations, allocations, accruals, and complex multi-entity activity. Experience leading close processes, audits, tax work, financial reporting, internal controls, and outside service provider relationships. Strong analytical judgment, including the ability to interpret financial results, identify material variances and trends, and translate financial information into clear reporting. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with senior management, auditors, brokers, vendors, banks, administrators, and other external partners. Experience managing and developing people while remaining personally accountable for the details and quality of the work. Experience operating in a meaningful-scale, institutional environment with strong close discipline, reporting standards, controls, audits, outside-provider management, and team structure. The ability to bring those standards into a growing, fast-moving organization. An ownership mentality, with a consistent habit of surfacing issues early and driving them to resolution.
