As Finance Director, you will steer the financial engine behind Vermont Housing and Conservation Board's (VHCB) statewide affordable housing and conservation initiatives. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer and serving as their primary strategic backup, you will direct day-to-day fiscal operations, supervise and mentor the finance team, and ensure the integrity of multi-fund revenue streams—including major federal awards and state transfer taxes. Role Entails:
Fiscal Leadership & Operations:
Oversee daily organizational accounting, run cash management strategies, and ensure accurate, timely internal and external multi-fund reporting.
Audit & Budget Oversight:
Lead the annual audit lifecycle in coordination with external auditors, produce draft financial statements and schedules, and partner with the CFO on organizational budgeting and interim financial modeling.
Financial Monitoring Systems:
Monitor VHCB's substantial loan portfolio alongside legal counsel, establish accounting structures for new awards, run cost allocations, oversee grantee compliance throughout the funding lifecycle, and equip program directors with clear, actionable financial management intelligence.
Cash Management:
Serve as the primary liaison to banking partners and State of Vermont financial systems (VISION).
Team Supervision & Systems Management:
Provide daily guidance and professional mentorship to the Finance Team while managing security, internal controls, and data integrity across VHCB's accounting platforms and project databases, and collaborating with Human Resources on payroll and HR integration. Qualifications:
Committed to supporting VHCB's mission CPA license or equivalent, such a business degree and a significant experience in a non-profit and/or governmental accounting. Demonstrated Ability to lead an accounting team. Extensive experience in financial management of non-profit and/or government entities and federal grants management; with proficient knowledge of governmental fund accounting and GAAP and familiarity with the Uniform Administrative Guidance. Previous experience or leadership working through audits. Knowledgeable on cost allocation and indirect rate development. Strong analytic skills, stellar attention to detail, and concern for accuracy; Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with both financial and non-financial audiences; good organizational and time management skills; Demonstrated ability to function well as part of team during cyclical periods of high demand to provide direct support and oversight; Strong grasp on financial technology, including advanced use of Excel, experience with accounting software packages, Microsoft suite and pdf software, databases, and document management systems. Demonstration of a curious, creative, and energetic approach to work.
Compensation:
