The company serves municipal, wildland, and industrial fire markets with a broad range of products, including brush trucks, nozzles, valves, pump testing and drafting equipment, and mobile foam firefighting systems. We are seeking a Controller to serve as the financial backbone of our company. This is a working leadership role — you will manage a small accounting team, own the numbers across all business units, and deliver consolidated financials to company leadership. The right candidate is someone who wants to build, not maintain, and who is energized by the complexity of a multi-entity platform. This role is intentionally scoped with a clear pathway toward Chief Financial Officer for the individual who grows with us. We are not looking for someone who has already arrived — we are looking for someone who is ready to earn it Duties and Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Consolidation Own the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close process across all business units. Prepare and deliver consolidated financial statements to company leadership. Maintain separate entity reporting for each business unit while producing consolidated financial statements. Develop and maintain management reporting packages, KPI dashboards, and variance analysis. Accounting Operations & Controls Manage all core accounting functions: AP, AR, payroll coordination, general ledger, and bank reconciliations. Establish and enforce internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures across all entities. Oversee job costing and cost accounting for manufacturing operations; manage inventory valuation across product lines. Ensure sales tax compliance across multiple states and jurisdictions. Serve as the primary liaison with the external CPA firm for tax preparation and any audit or review engagements. Budgeting, Planning & Analysis Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process across all business units and the holding company. Partner with business unit managers to analyze financial performance, identify trends, and support operational decisions. Provide cash flow forecasting and working capital management to support both operations and growth initiatives. Shared Services & Technology Manage and continuously improve shared services across the platform including accounting, billing, and financial reporting infrastructure. Administer and optimize the company's accounting systems; currently operating QuickBooks Enterprise (Manufacturing edition). Lead the evaluation and future implementation of an ERP system as the company scales. Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities across finance and accounting functions. M&A Support & Integration Support financial due diligence for tuck-in acquisitions, including quality of earnings analysis and financial statement review. Lead financial integration of acquired entities into the holding company reporting structure and shared services platform. Assist in developing post-acquisition reporting frameworks, intercompany eliminations, and combined entity analytics. Team Leadership Directly manage a small accounting team; mentor, develop, and hold team members accountable. Remain a hands-on contributor — willing to work alongside the team when needed. Travel periodically to business unit locations (up to 10% of time). Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field. 5-10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2-3 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role. Demonstrated experience managing multi-entity or multi-site accounting consolidations. Strong working knowledge of GAAP; experience with job costing and/or manufacturing accounting required. Proficiency with QuickBooks Enterprise or comparable mid-market accounting software. Proven ability to manage and develop a small team while remaining a hands-on contributor. Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate financial data into actionable business insights. High degree of integrity, discretion, and professionalism in handling sensitive financial information. Preferred CPA designation (active or inactive). Experience in a holding company, private equity-backed, or multi-entity platform environment. Familiarity with ERP systems (NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar); ERP implementation experience a plus. Exposure to M&A financial due diligence or post-acquisition integration. Experience with multi-state sales tax compliance and nexus analysis. Background in manufacturing, distribution, or specialty equipment industries. Industry experience in fire, public safety, or specialty vehicles is a plus but not required.
