Job Description

Controller — Hazel's Expedited Freight (Addison, TX)
Location:
Addison, TX Job Type:
Full-time, On-site Reports to: CEO About the Role Hazel's is seeking a Controller to own our accounting and finance function and lead the team that runs it. This is the senior financial leader in the company: you will be accountable for the integrity of our numbers, the strength of our controls, and the people and systems that produce them. The ideal candidate is a decisive, hands-on leader who holds high standards for accuracy and holds people accountable to them. You are as comfortable building a close calendar and reconciling a difficult account as you are coaching a team, pushing back on a department for clean data, or walking the CEO, our bank, and our auditors through the results. This role is based in our Addison office and works directly with the CEO and executive leadership team. What You'll Do You'll lead the Finance and Accounting Department with a focus on integrity, accuracy, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities include:
Own the full accounting cycle and a timely, accurate month-end and year-end close, including financial statements and management reporting for the CEO and leadership team. Lead, develop, and hold accountable the accounting team, including the Assistant Controller, staff accountants, and AP, AR, billing, and payroll staff; set clear expectations, priorities, and deadlines. Design, maintain, and enforce internal controls, policies, and procedures that protect the company's assets and keep our financial data reliable. Oversee budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and banking relationships, including covenant compliance and lender reporting. Lead the annual audit and coordinate tax compliance with outside CPAs; serve as the primary contact for auditors, banks, insurers, and external partners. Provide financial analysis and insight — margins, lane and customer profitability, cost trends — to guide strategic and operational decisions. Drive improvements in our accounting systems (NetSuite and QuickBooks), reporting automation, and process efficiency as the business grows. Partner with operations, sales, and HR leaders to resolve issues at the source and make sure the data flowing into accounting is complete and correct. Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
This position offers real ownership:
a seat at the leadership table, a team to build, and the authority to set the standard for how finance runs at Hazel's. What You Bring Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (Master's/MBA preferred) 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior financial management role Proven experience leading and developing an accounting team, including managing managers or senior staff Track record of owning the month-end close, financial statements, and the external audit Strong command of GAAP, internal controls, and audit practices Experience with NetSuite and QuickBooks CPA strongly preferred High integrity, meticulous attention to detail, and the judgment and confidence to make the call and stand behind it Clear communicator who can explain the numbers to non-financial leaders and hold them to deadlines Experience in transportation, logistics, or another multi-location service business is a plus Why Hazel's At Hazel's, you'll join a company with a strong foundation and a forward-looking mindset.
