Job Description

FINANCIAL CONTROLLER
Action Solar | Lehi, Utah | Full-Time | Reports to CFO Mission The Financial Controller owns the integrity of Action Solar's financial records, reporting infrastructure, and accounting operations. This person ensures that every dollar in and out of the business is accurately captured, reconciled, and reported — and that the teams responsible for AR and AP are well-led and held to a high standard. The Controller is the CFO's operational right hand: not just keeping score, but building the systems, controls, and team that make great financial management possible as the company scales. Outcomes The person in this role will be measured against these results. Own the monthly close — Reduce month-end close cycle to ≤7 business days with a clean, documented close checklist by Q3. No surprises, no late restatements. Harden NetSuite — Complete a full chart of accounts review, standardize the job costing structure across C&I and residential segments, and eliminate manual workarounds inherited from the December 2025 go-live. Build a reporting cadence — Deliver accurate, timely P&L and balance sheet packages to the CFO and leadership team each month — with variance commentary, not just numbers. Lead AR and AP — Directly supervise and develop the AR and AP functions. Set coding and documentation standards, own vendor payment timing, drive collections discipline, and reduce aged AR over 60 days by 25% within the first two quarters. Internal controls foundation — Document and implement baseline controls across AP, payroll, and cash management within the first 90 days. Tax compliance ownership — Own all tax compliance operations: payroll tax deposits and filings, 1099 preparation, multi-state business registrations and local license filings, and annual entity reporting. Serve as the primary liaison to the company's outside CPA firm for income tax return preparation and year-end workpapers. Manage and develop the team — Supervise accounting staff (AP clerk, bookkeeper, staff accountant as the team grows). Set clear expectations, develop their skills, and hold them accountable to results. Support the CFO — Serve as a capable partner on budgeting, forecasting, year-end audit or review, and ad hoc financial analysis including M&A diligence as opportunities arise. Competencies The following are the behaviors and technical skills required to achieve the outcomes above. These are the criteria against which candidates will be evaluated Technical Requirements Deep working knowledge of GAAP, job costing, and project-based revenue recognition (percentage of completion preferred for EPC context) Proficiency in NetSuite ERP — able to build and troubleshoot saved searches, understand the data model, and work through coding issues independently Multi-state tax compliance experience: payroll tax, 1099s, local business licenses, and nexus tracking across states CPA license strongly preferred; accounting degree required Strong Excel skills; Power BI or similar BI tool experience a plus Behavioral Competencies (A Player indicators from "Who") Competency What it looks like in this role Efficiency Finds ways to accomplish more with less. Doesn't wait to be told what to do. Follows through Does what they say they'll do, on time, every time. Close deadlines are not suggestions. Attention to detail Reconciliations are clean and documented. Takes ownership of the numbers. Proactivity Identifies problems and brings solutions, not just issues. Sees around corners on compliance deadlines. Calm under pressure Month-end, audit, and cash crunches happen. This person doesn't rattle. Coachability Open to feedback; models continuous improvement for their team. Honest and direct Willing to tell leadership uncomfortable truths about the numbers. People leadership Holds their team to high standards while developing them. Not just a solo contributor. About Action Solar Action Solar is a Utah-based solar EPC company doing approximately $50M in annual revenue across commercial/industrial and residential solar installations. We went live on NetSuite ERP in late 2025 and are actively building the financial infrastructure to support continued growth. This is not a "maintain the status quo" role.
