We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting function across all three brands and play a key role in transitioning accounting operations from our current outsourced model to an internally managed organization. Position Summary The Controller will report directly to the CFO and have primary responsibility for the accuracy, timeliness, controls, and day-to-day leadership of the company's accounting function. Initially, this individual will play a critical role in transitioning accounting processes, institutional knowledge, systems, reconciliations, and reporting from our outsourced accounting provider to an internal team . Following the transition, the Controller will own the monthly close, financial reporting, general ledger, accounts payable, treasury-related accounting, balance-sheet reconciliations, fixed assets, acquisition accounting support, audit coordination, and development of the accounting team. This is a hands-on leadership position. The successful candidate will be comfortable operating at both levels: reviewing consolidated financial statements and accounting policy one moment and digging into an individual account reconciliation or transaction issue the next. The Controller will also help design a scalable accounting organization that combines a strong internal team with automation and potentially offshore/shared-service resources for appropriate transactional functions. Key Responsibilities Accounting Leadership & Financial Reporting Own the accounting function across Jersey Mike's, Wingstop and The Smoked Taco entities. Lead the monthly, quarterly and annual close process and establish a consistent, disciplined close calendar. Ensure timely and accurate preparation of consolidated and entity-level financial statements. Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts across a complex multi-entity organization. Review monthly P&Ls, balance sheets and supporting schedules for completeness and accuracy. Establish procedures governing journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals and period-end adjustments. Ensure prior-period changes and post-close adjustments are appropriately controlled, documented and communicated. Partner with the CFO on management, lender and board reporting. Transition From Outsourced Accounting Lead the operational transition from the existing outsourced accounting provider. Develop a comprehensive transition plan covering systems, processes, historical records, recurring entries, reconciliations, vendor information, reporting and institutional knowledge. Identify accounting issues and unreconciled balances inherited during the transition and develop plans to resolve them. Determine which activities should be performed internally, automated, or handled through offshore/shared-service resources. Establish documented accounting procedures and clear ownership of all recurring accounting activities. Build an accounting function capable of scaling as the organization grows toward approximately 200 restaurants. Accounts Payable & Working Capital Provide leadership and oversight of the AP function across all brands and entities. Establish controls to ensure invoices are processed accurately and vendors are paid timely. Maintain visibility into AP aging and prevent service interruptions, late fees and other consequences of delayed payments. Oversee vendor setup and changes with appropriate fraud-prevention controls and segregation of duties. Improve processes surrounding restaurant-level invoice coding, approvals and exception handling. Support cash forecasting and working-capital management. Balance Sheet & Cash Controls Own the balance-sheet reconciliation process and ensure all material accounts are reconciled monthly. Oversee bank, credit-card, delivery-platform, intercompany and other high-volume reconciliations. Ensure cash activity is accurately recorded and appropriately controlled. Maintain accurate intercompany accounting across legal entities and brands. Establish review standards for reconciliations prepared by staff or offshore resources. Partner with the CFO on treasury processes and cash management. Restaurant & Multi-Unit Accounting Maintain accurate store-level and consolidated reporting across nearly 100 restaurant locations. Ensure appropriate accounting for sales, cash, credit cards, third-party delivery, gift cards, loyalty programs, sales taxes, inventory, food costs, labor-related accruals, royalties, advertising funds, rent and other restaurant-specific activity. Partner with Operations to investigate unusual store-level financial results and accounting discrepancies. Develop processes that maintain financial consistency across multiple brands and states while accommodating brand-specific requirements. Acquisitions, Development & Fixed Assets Support accounting integration of acquired restaurant groups. Assist with purchase accounting and acquisition-related schedules in coordination with the CFO and external advisors. Establish processes to rapidly integrate newly acquired entities into the company's accounting and reporting environment. Oversee fixed-asset accounting, capital projects, construction-in-progress and depreciation. Partner with Development and Finance to maintain accurate accounting for new restaurant construction and openings. Controls, Audit & Compliance Design and maintain an appropriate internal-control environment as the organization grows. Establish segregation of duties across accounting, treasury and payment functions. Coordinate annual financial statement audits and serve as the primary day-to-day accounting contact for external auditors. Support tax filings and compliance in coordination with external tax advisors. Maintain appropriate accounting documentation and retention practices. Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies. Support lender reporting and financial covenant calculations as needed. Team Development Recruit, develop and lead the internal accounting team. Establish clear roles, responsibilities, performance expectations and review procedures. Determine the appropriate mix of internal employees, technology and offshore/shared-service resources. Develop team members while maintaining appropriate review and approval controls. Create a culture of accountability, responsiveness, accuracy and continuous process improvement. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field. Approximately 7+ years of progressive accounting experience , including meaningful responsibility for the monthly close and financial reporting. Prior Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager or comparable leadership experience. Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial statement preparation. Demonstrated experience managing complex balance-sheet reconciliations and accounting processes. Experience supervising and developing accounting professionals. Strong Excel skills and ability to work effectively with large datasets. Demonstrated ability to identify accounting problems, determine root causes and implement sustainable solutions. Ability to operate effectively in a fast-growing, entrepreneurial environment. Preferred CPA or active CPA candidate. Restaurant, hospitality, retail, franchise or other multi-unit accounting experience. Experience with a multi-entity organization. Experience transitioning accounting from an outsourced provider or integrating acquired businesses. Experience with Restaurant365 or another restaurant accounting/ERP platform. Experience managing offshore or shared-service accounting resources. Experience supporting acquisitions and purchase accounting. Experience working with private-equity-backed or similarly high-growth organizations. What Success Looks Like During the first 12 months, the Controller will be expected to: Successfully transition accounting ownership from the outsourced provider to the internal finance organization. Establish a reliable and repeatable monthly close process with clearly defined deadlines. Produce accurate financial statements without recurring post-close corrections or unexplained prior-period changes. Bring balance-sheet reconciliations current and establish monthly review standards. Establish strong AP, cash and vendor controls. Build and develop the initial internal accounting team. Create documented accounting processes that reduce dependence on individual institutional knowledge. Establish an effective model for using internal, offshore and automated resources. Improve responsiveness of Finance to Operations and other departments. Build an accounting infrastructure capable of supporting significant continued restaurant growth.
