Job Description
Description We are looking for an experienced Controller to support with critical financial leadership and oversight. This Long-term Contract position will focus on year-end close, financial reporting, budget stewardship, and operational guidance across key programs and teams. The ideal candidate brings strong public sector expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to partner with leadership on strategic and compliance-focused initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Lead year-end close activities and oversee the preparation of accurate financial reports, statements, and supporting documentation for leadership and governing stakeholders.
- Collaborate with department leadership to shape near-term and long-range financial and operational plans that align with organizational objectives.
- Provide senior-level guidance for major departmental initiatives, cross-functional efforts, and organizational change activities, including serving in a delegated leadership capacity when needed.
- Direct oversight of budgets, forecasting, procurement coordination, contract administration, and internal control practices to protect public resources.
- Monitor divisional performance, establish measurable operating standards, and drive continuous improvement in service quality and accountability.
- Ensure compliance with applicable city, state, and federal requirements across financial and operational activities.
- Lead, mentor, and evaluate managers and senior staff while fostering staff development, succession readiness, and an engaged workplace culture.
- Represent the department in meetings and communications with internal leaders, external partners, and other key stakeholders. Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, Management, or a related discipline.
- At least 7 years of progressive leadership experience in finance, accounting, or operational management, preferably within government or other public sector settings.
- Demonstrated expertise in annual financial reporting, board reporting, month-end close, year-end close, and financial statement preparation.
- Strong background in balance sheet reconciliations, financial reconciliations, internal controls, and budget oversight.
- Knowledge of public sector governance, regulatory compliance, and the financial management standards that apply to municipal or large organizational environments.
- Proven ability to lead teams, manage complex priorities, and support strategic initiatives in a highly accountable setting.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to build productive relationships across diverse stakeholder groups.
