Position Overview We are seeking an energetic and detail-oriented Controller to lead day-to-day accounting operations. This role is ideal for a construction‑oriented accounting professional who thrives in a fast‑paced, project‑driven environment and is comfortable managing cash flow, job cost accounting, and multi‑union payroll. The ideal candidate is someone who can handle high-level financial strategy with the owner one hour, and then dive into a certified payroll discrepancy the next. Key Responsibilities Month‑End & General Accounting Manage month‑end close processes Maintain General Ledger accuracy and integrity Prepare and review WIP (Work in Progress) reports Complete monthly reconciliations of the General Ledger to project‑specific costs Produce accurate and timely financial statements Construction & Project Accounting Set up new projects in Viewpoint Spectrum, including estimates, subcontracts, SOVs, and committed costs Reconcile job costs across the General Ledger, subcontracts, and vendor invoicing Prepare monthly pay applications to General Contractors, including change orders Update and manage all change orders in Spectrum and issue subcontractor change orders Analyze project financials, including WIP, committed costs, and projected costs Support Project Managers with ad‑hoc reporting related to costs, labor hours, and profitability Resolve subcontractor billing issues and track retention transfers and balances Payroll, Taxes & Compliance Review and approve payroll, including multi‑union payroll (two unions) Review monthly union contributions Backup payroll as needed Expert-level oversight of WA State L&I Prevailing Wage requirements, including timely filing of Intents/Affidavits and managing LCPtracker systems for GC compliance. Calculate and file Business & Occupation (B&O) and Sales/Use tax reports (monthly, quarterly, and annual, including city filings) Renew city and state business licenses Financial Operations & Administration Oversee bill‑pay processes and accounting system setup and monitoring in Viewpoint Spectrum Supervise and mentor accounting and administrative staff (currently two direct reports, with a third being added) Assist in training, task delegation, and deadline management Gather data and coordinate with insurance brokers for annual renewals (general liability, workers' comp, health, auto) Proactively manage the Surety/Bonding relationship; prepare 'Bond-Ready' financial packages and maintain the key financial ratios required for our aggregate line. Serve as liaison with external CPAs and legal counsel as needed Other duties as assigned
Systems & Tools ERP:
Viewpoint Spectrum Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel required
Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
Experience:
7+ years in Construction Accounting; 3+ years in a Controller or Accounting Manager role.
Public Works Expert:
Deep knowledge of WA State Prevailing Wage and Certified Payroll is non-negotiable. The "WIP"
Factor:
Must demonstrate mastery of Work in Progress (WIP) reporting and its impact on the P&L/Balance Sheet.
Technical Skills:
Viewpoint Spectrum experience is a significant advantage. Advanced Excel (vlookups, pivot tables, data modeling) is required.
Leadership:
Proven ability to manage and mentor an accounting team of 3+. Certification (Bonus): CCIFP, CPA, or CMA is a plus but not required for the right "hands-on" expert.
