Job Description

Spilman Thomas & Battle, PLLC , a full-service, super-regional law firm with nine offices located in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida is seeking a knowledgeable and technically proficient Assistant Controller in its Charleston, WV headquarters. Responsibilities include :
  • Management and development of the Accounting team
  • General accounting duties (bank reconciliations, account reconciliations, month-end and year-end close)
  • Coordination of all accounting functions (accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and reporting)
  • Act as backup for all accounting functions
  • Expense management
  • Fixed asset inventory and management, including depreciation
  • Accounting for corporate trust accounts
  • Assist with annual financial audit
  • Assist with management and oversight of the firm's 401(k) plan, including audit preparation
  • Assist with management and oversight of the firm's time and billing system
  • Assist with special projects and data analytics
Requirements:
  • Must be professional, conscientious, detail-oriented, and highly motivated
  • Bachelor's degree required in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA certificate preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent financial analysis and reporting skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and respond to changing priorities
  • Desire to continually improve operational excellence
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently, both independently and in a team environment
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills
  • Previous experience with law firm time and billing systems preferred
  • Ability to effectively integrate technology to maximize efficiency of the department
  • Analytical thinker
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
