SALARY INFORMATION
Starting Pay:
Firefighter/EMT•$53,967.00 annual base pay (2,912 hours worked annually)
Starting Pay:
Firefighter/Paramedic•$67,632.00 annual base pay (2,912 hours worked annually) Per current CBA contract•4% increase to base pay effective on 10/1/2026.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Protect life and property by performing firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties. Maintain fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Perform general fire inspection and community outreach and education. Frequent contact with the public, which requires being courteous, discretion, and sound judgment. Work is performed inside and outside in various weather conditions in and around potentially hazardous areas and conditions that could be life threatening.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following duties provide a general list of tasks. The position may or may not perform all the tasks listed and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and evolving business practices: Lays, connects and places hose line in operations. Raises and climbs ladders. Enter buildings and other fire-engulfed areas. Uses extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and axes and other hand equipment. Ventilates burning buildings and structures. Throws salvage covers and removes debris. Operates pumps. Makes regular inspections of apparatus and equipment and notifies supervisor of defects. Conducts routine maintenance and apparatus check-out as required. Drives and operates all rescue equipment as directed. Makes visual and physical inspections of buildings to locate fire hazards. Rescues and removes individuals from danger. Administers life support functions to sick, injured or afflicted persons. Makes periodic inspections of buildings to locate fire hazards. Performs physical cleaning and maintenance tasks on department buildings and equipment using brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, etc. Performs hydrant maintenance. Attends training and drill sessions in such subjects as firefighting and inspection methods, equipment operations and emergency medical treatment. Attends and participates in administrative meetings and training sessions as required. Assists in training new employees as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent. At least 18 years of age or older. Must be registered as a United States Citizen.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license. Applicants who possess a valid out of state driver's license must obtain the Florida license within ten (10) days of employment. Current valid State of Florida Minimum Fire Standards Certificate of Compliance. Current valid
State of Florida or National Registry:
EMT or Paramedic certification.
EMTs:

AHA / CPR
HealthCare Provider or its equivalent.
Paramedics:
current valid
AHA / CPR
HealthCare Provider or its equivalent and copy of
AHA/ACLS
certification. Copy of approved 16-hour emergency vehicle operations course certification (EVOC/CEVO). Applicants may have to provide current CPAT certification and or pass internal department Physical Performance Test. Veteran's preference, a copy of form DD214 must be submitted for verification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of street locations, geography, and types of construction in the city preferred. Excellent communication skills required. Ability to act effectively in stressful situations required. Ability to perform strenuous physical activities during emergency, training, or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold, or smoke required. Ability to learn firefighting techniques, policies, procedures, and practices required. Applicants may be required to take and pass written examinations, as well as oral interviews.

Must be able to meet and maintain the physical qualifications as defined by
NFPA 1582.

Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Meet physical requirements as set forth by the State of Florida. Must endure sustained acts of physical exhaustion and endure periods of duty under unfavorable and life-threatening conditions. Ability to drive and navigate effectively large-scale fire engines and other vehicles. Ability to lift and carry objects up to 80 lbs. and the ability to pull objects up to 135 lbs. Must be able to successfully do the following activities: reaching, pulling, pushing, balancing, throwing, climbing (including ladders), walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, jumping, running, and smelling.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
May involve exposure to hazardous materials, extreme weather, or dangerous situations. Must be available for on-call duty, emergencies, and extended hours as needed. Works both indoors and outdoors, being exposed to various weather conditions. Working a 24-hour shift with minimal or no sleep.

Consumption of alcohol is prohibited while on duty or during shifts. Must be a non-tobacco user at the time of application and maintain a tobacco-free status throughout employment with the City of Groveland. This position is identified as part of Essential Services and as such is subject to recall or extended work hours for emergencies and natural disasters.
