FY26: Operation Assistant, Department of Materials Management (DMM), 8hrs/12mos, Ad Closes on 5/18/26
Job Specific Information :
This position reports directly to the Taylor Science Center (Boyds MD), but may be called to work in other areas of DMM. Hours of operation are 6am to 2:30pm. Applicants will need to obtain a commercial drivers license and be able to complete an OSHA certified forklift training program. This interview will consist of both an oral interview and a computerized skills test. Duties include receiving, packing, and keeping inventory accounts of science materials. Under general supervision, performs responsible storekeeping work in the receipt, storage, issuance, and shipment o warehouse items to schools, maintenance shops, and offices. Provides technical guidance to lower level supply service workers and, where applicable, food service delivery workers. This class differs from that of supply service workers I and II in that it involves the inspection of incoming shipments and completed supply and food orders for accuracy and conformance with specifications and sanitation requirements. Nature of work also involves assisting the supervisor in training and providing guidance to warehouse personnel in the receipt, inspection, palletizing, storage, issuance, and delivery of supplies, food and related items, textbooks, furniture, equipment, and other items. The work requires a good knowledge of storekeeping, delivery, and sanitation procedures and familiarity with a wide variety of commodities stored or processed through a central warehouse facility.
Physical Demands:
Ability to move heavy items weighing up to 100 lbs. and to perform work requiring sustained moderate physical effort. Ability to work in zero degree temperatures for considerable periods of time required for food service positions.
Special Requirements:
Ability to work overtime, including weekends.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of storekeeping and shipping methods and practices. Knowledge of storage requirements for supplies, food and related items, furniture, materials, equipment, and other commodities. Knowledge of sanitation requirements for food storage and delivery required for some positions. Ability to provide guidance and direction to lower level supply service workers. Ability to make complete and accurate checks of goods entering and leaving the warehouse. Ability to perform minor repairs on stock items. Ability to detect insect and rodent infestation required for food service positions. Ability to prepare accurate reports. Ability to read, write and make arithmetic computations at the level required by the position duties. Food service positions require the ability to calculate weights per cubic foot and dimensions in square and cubic feet. Skill in the operation of forklifts and other power industrial equipment and manual warehouse equipment. Skill in the operation of trucks weighing up to 46,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight. Skill in the operation of a computer terminal. Good human relations and communications skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Education Training Experience:
High School or GED diploma required. Courses in warehouse and distribution management desirable. Experience as a Truck Driver Warehouse Worker or equivalent. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
Certificate License:
Possession of a valid Maryland class B commercial driver^s license or equivalent, within three months of employment. Completion of an OSHA approved certification program in the operation of power industrial equipment. Food service positions require the ability to obtain certification in sanitation by the State of Maryland.
