Responsibilities:
The following duties are to be performed under the supervision of the Fond du Lac Reservation Forester Collects stand inventory for forest inventory, timber sales, forest development projects, timber trespass, and realty appraisals. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Work under the direction of the Forester for forestry related GIS projects and under direction of Land Information Manager for GIS that are beyond the scope of Forestry. Responsible for data entry into operations inventory database software, OPTICS, volume calculation software, and GIS updates using ArcgGIS. Digitize and update forest inventory, leases, parcels, water, wetlands, roads, 911 emergency address information and other GIS layers. Prepare paper maps at multiple scales from previously digitized map layers for others in the Resource Management division or the general public. Forest Inventory The GIS/Forestry Technician works under the direction of the Forester with Forest Inventory GIS/ Forestry Technician completes inventory field work (60% of annual inventory goals), completes check cruises, ensures data is entered into forest inventory database and GIS updates are completed. Inventory field work must be within established standards for accuracy. Provides field instruction to apprentice cruisers in fundamental timber measuring practices, cruise methods, and techniques. Timber Sales Assists Forester or Forest Manager with various Timber Sale tasks including but not limited to: Cruising Timber Sale Marking Timber in accordance with silvicultural prescription Locating and marking property and sale unit boundaries. Scaling forest products Timber sale administration in the absence of the Forester or Forest Manager Forest Development Assists Forest Manager or Forester with various Forest Development tasks including but not limited to: Layout project boundaries Inspect site preparation work. Supervise tree planting crews. Post project monitoring. Fire Management Assists Forest Manager or Forester with various Fire Management tasks including but not limited to: Assist with prescribed burn and wildfire suppression activities at the FFT2 level, or higher, which may include evening and weekend work. Assists Fire Crew in maintaining fire readiness. Attends fire training according to training plan. Assists with Rx burn layout. Monitors pre-and post project fuels conditions (both mechanical and prescribed burns Completes wildfire GIS mapping as needed. Fee to Trust Process Under the direction of the Forester the GIS/Forestry Technician will complete: Phase 1 walk-over reports Maps for the Phase 1 Updating GIS Responsible for keeping equipment assigned to the Forestry Technician in good operating order. Appropriate work attire is required. Must attend all mandatory department trainings. Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees and/or clients. Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems. Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers. Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community. Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies. Maintains a clean and organized work area. Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.
Qualifications:
Valid Driver's License issued in the US is required. Eligibility determined by FDL's insurance company. AA in Forestry, Natural Resources, or related degree with at least 12 semester hours in forestry, natural resources, outdoor recreation, conservation/wildlife, civil or forest engineering; or four years experience in forestry, natural resources; or a combination of education and experience is required. Cruiser certification is required, if not certified at the time of hire; employee must become certified with 90 days of hire. Employment is contingent upon this requirement and must be kept current for the duration of employment. GIS certificate or two years demonstrated experience working with Geographic Information Systems is required. Familiarity with forestry terms and equipment such as compass, prism, GPS, chainsaws, Pulaski, pumps, backpack pumps, etc. is required. Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, Access, Excel, and Microsoft Outlook is required. Proficient in the use of various Geographic Positioning System (GPS) units are required. Position requires on-call availability. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required. Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required. Attention to detail and accuracy is required. Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved. Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation's Personnel Policies. Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks. Subject to immunization review and submitted proof of required vaccinations. Travel is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to pass the physical fitness test (pack test) in order to be Nationally Qualified for firefighting. Lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity. Walking over uneven terrain, standing, running, bending, stooping, climbing, pushing, and pulling for long periods of time. Moderate risks encountered in walking over rough terrain, and the loading, unloading and transportation of forestry equipment and machinery. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, including work in adverse or extreme weather conditions.
