Part-Time Corrections Officer Gratiot County Sheriff's Department Location:
Ithaca, Michigan Position Type:
Part-Time Starting Wage:
$20.00 Position Summary The Gratiot County Sheriff's Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Part-Time Corrections Officer. This position is responsible for maintaining the safe, secure, and orderly operation of the County Jail and the custody, supervision, and control of inmates in accordance with Michigan law and established correctional standards. The Corrections Division operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. A successful candidate must be able to meet the Michigan standards set for Corrections Officers https://www.misctc.org/standards.html Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise and monitor inmates in housing units and throughout the facility
  • Conduct routine headcounts, security inspections, and cell checks
  • Perform booking, fingerprinting, classification, and release procedures
  • Enforce facility rules, regulations, and disciplinary procedures
  • Search inmates, cells, and common areas for contraband
  • Maintain detailed logs, reports, and incident documentation
  • Respond to emergencies, disturbances, and medical situations using appropriate response techniques
  • Maintain professional and effective working relationships with staff, inmates, and the public Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Valid Michigan driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • No felony convictions; must pass a comprehensive background investigation
  • Ability to pass physical, psychological, and drug screening evaluations Licensing & Training Requirements
  • Must obtain and maintain Local Corrections Officer Training (LCOTS) certification within one (1) year of hire.

  • Training standards are established under Michigan law for local corrections officers
  • Candidates interested in future law enforcement careers may pursue certification through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), which governs statewide law enforcement standards Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in corrections, law enforcement, military, or security
  • College coursework in criminal justice or related field
  • Knowledge of inmate management, correctional procedures, and report writing Work Schedule
  • Part-time, hours will vary depending on needs of the department
  • Must be available for rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Mandatory overtime may be required based on operational needs Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain alert for extended periods
  • Ability to restrain combative individuals and respond to physical situations
