Wildlife Biologist SALARY:
Grade 8 (minimum starting wage = $17.21/hr.)SUMMARY:
The Habitat Specialist will assist with program development and reporting and plan activities for the implementation of KBIC Management and Project Plans pertinent to habitat restoration and invasive species removal. The Habitat Specialist will also be responsible for producing education and outreach materials and providing informational presentations to various agencies and the public.QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Ecology, Biology, Botany, Natural Resource Management, or related field. OR
- Associate's Degree in Ecology, Biology, Botany, Natural Resource Management, or closely related field AND at least two (2) years of related work experience. OR
- High School diploma or GED AND at least five (5) years combined education and work experience in Ecology, Biology, Botany, Natural Resources Management, or related field.
- One (1) year of professional-level experience designing and implementing native plant restoration or habitat management projects is preferred.
- Must possess knowledge of plant species and habitats native to Michigan and the Lake Superior Basin.
- Must possess knowledge of invasive plant species present in Michigan and Lake Superior Basin and potential threats to the Lake Superior ecosystem and habitats.
- Must possess knowledge of plant propagation methods.
- Knowledge of food sovereignty and sustainable food systems is preferred.
- Must have previous supervisory experience, preferably leading field crew(s) of 5 or more people.
- Must have strong organizational skills to effectively maintain, prioritize, and implement projects.
- Must have strong written and oral communication skills to effectively convey both technical and non-technical information to a variety of audiences.
- Experience with grant writing and/or grant management preferred.
- Experience working with tribal communities and traditional ecological knowledge is preferred.
- Must be able to use maps, compass, and GPS units for project work. Experience with GIS/mapping software is preferred.
- Must have experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Must be able to safely operate and maintain Off-Road Vehicles, motorboats, canoes, and kayaks.
- Must have current Michigan State Commercial or Federal pesticide applicators certification (continuing credits will be considered) or obtain certification within one (1) year of employment.
- Must be in good physical condition, able to perform strenuous duties for extended periods; such as walking long distances of up to several miles, and shall be able to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to conduct fieldwork in a variety of rugged and remote environmental conditions, including times of inclement weather such as rain, heat, or cold.
- Must be at least 21 years of age, possess a valid, unrestricted Michigan Driver's License; a good driving record; and be insurable to operate KBIC fleet vehicles, and must sign KBIC Driving Record Check form.
- Must be willing to travel at least 50 miles several times a week.
- Must be able to obtain a satisfactory clearance under the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act Background Investigations Policy.
- Employment is contingent upon the satisfactory result of a Security Background Check, pre-employment drug testing, and pre-employment physical.

1. Shall complete relevant training for position when directed and when such training is available. Training may include travel out of town and overnight stays. Will also identify and schedule the training of other staff and complete evaluation of staff/technician performance. 2. Maintain disciplined and professional work ethic both with minimal supervision and in a team environment. 3. Maintain confidentiality regarding KBIC, Department, and staff-related information. 4. Responsible for maintaining a daily work log, mileage logs, completing timesheets, writing reports, assisting with designing and presenting public education materials, website updates, outreach and education events, making purchases, attending meetings, and other general departmental tasks and activities. 5. Lead or assist with native plant restoration and invasive species monitoring and control work following methods outlined in work plans. 6. Supervise plant technicians, Invasive Species Coordinator, and other work crews as assigned. Supervision includes providing necessary training to staff, developing work plans, and planning and coordinating daily work activities (planting, weeding, chemical application, watering, sowing, data collection, monitoring, control, inventories, collection of plant material). 7. Assists with coordinated efforts for native plant restoration and invasive plant control efforts with KISMA and other partners. 8. Collects and interprets habitat and other natural resources/ecological data to support the implementation, revision, or development of management/stewardship plans and technical reports. 9. Assist with food sovereignty/food systems initiatives, including participation in meetings and committees. 10. Responsible for the maintenance of program survey equipment and routine restocking of supplies. This includes cleaning and maintenance of all equipment as it is utilized such as trucks, four-wheelers, snowmobiles, boats, and canoes. 11. Works with Wildlife Biologist, Wildlife Coordinator, Wetlands Specialist, and Ecologist on monitoring and restoration projects, including wild rice. 12. Assist with the development of grant proposals to continue funding for this position, technicians, and program. 13. Shall act as a resource for staff and community members on native and invasive plant species. Shall be familiar with relevant KBIC and regional plans to respond to inquiries. 14. Performs other duties as directed by supervisor.
