Job Description

Position Summary:
Schoolcraft High School is seeking a passionate, dedicated, and relationship-driven leader to serve as our next Varsity Basketball Head Coach. We are committed to building a program rooted in strong character, teamwork, academic excellence, and competitive success. The ideal candidate will prioritize developing young athletes as students, leaders, and people first, while fostering a positive, high-achieving team culture.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead all aspects of the varsity basketball program, including practices, games, player development, and team strategy. Design and implement developmentally appropriate training programs that emphasize skill development, conditioning, and basketball fundamentals. Foster a positive team culture centered on respect, accountability, resilience, and sportsmanship. Build strong, trusting relationships with players, parents, assistant coaches, school staff, and the broader community. Monitor and support student-athletes' academic progress and eligibility. Organize and manage off-season programs, summer leagues, camps, and fundraising activities as needed. Ensure full compliance with MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) rules, school policies, and district expectations. Collaborate with the Athletic Director and feeder programs (middle school, JV) to create a unified, vertically aligned basketball program.

Demonstrated ability to build meaningful, supportive relationships with student-athletes and their families. Passion for developing character, leadership, and life skills through the sport of basketball. Commitment to creating an inclusive, positive team environment where every player feels valued and challenged to grow. Strong communication skills with the ability to motivate, mentor, and connect with today's high school students. High emotional intelligence and the ability to model integrity, humility, and resilience daily.
Leadership & Success:
Proven track record of leadership in coaching, teaching, or other relevant roles, with a demonstrated history of success in developing individuals and teams. Ability to inspire excellence, set high standards, and hold players and staff accountable in a supportive way. Strategic thinker with strong basketball knowledge, game planning abilities, and player-development expertise.
Experience:
Previous head coaching experience at the high school, club, AAU, or college level is not required but highly preferred. Significant assistant coaching or player development experience will be strongly considered. Valid CPR/First Aid/AED certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start). Must pass a background check and meet all Michigan Department of Education and district requirements for coaching.
