General Summary - The Art Therapist/Professional Counselor encourages the client to express emotion and explore their problems with a wide range of art materials. Its purpose is to enable positive change and personal growth. The focus is not on the client's artistic skills, but their engagement in a creative personal expression. This enables the client to develop compensatory skills and strategies for problem solving, emotional expression, planning and cognitive organization.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Adapt therapy to meet clients needs
  • Identify and document indicators specific to executive functioning for each client
  • Plan, design, and implement a schedule of activities for individual clients and groups
  • Maintain Art Therapy space, materials, appropriately budget for supplies based on client needs
  • Provide an assessment and obtain information from medical records, medical staff, family members, and the client's themselves to assess client's capabilities, needs and interests.
  • Document interventions and client progress on daily progress notes
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports to treatment team as evidence of progress.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with team members
  • Confer with members of the team to plan and evaluate therapy program
  • Conduct initial evaluation of clients to determine appropriate needs.
  • Coordinate with mental health staff to develop treatment based on physician directive, functional capacity, and clinical assessment.
  • Observe, analyze, and record client's participation and progress towards treatment goals
  • Prepare and submit reports to treatment team to reflect client's reactions and evidence of progress in a timely manner.
  • Attend weekly staff case conferences, staff meetings, and monthly care conferences and other meetings as required.
  • Attend and participate in TBI functions, i.e. community based as requested.
  • Maintains appropriate licensure and/or certification, attends seminars to continue licensing requirements (CEU's etc.)
  • Maintains ethical standards and responsibilities in accordance with the requirements of the profession and position.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures as well as federal and state laws.
  • Follow all licensing and regulatory rules and CARF standards.
Competencies:
Required Skills/Abilities:
Excellent skills related to social perceptiveness and active listening. Excellent critical thinking, judgment, and decision-making skills.
  • Must have working knowledge neuroanatomy as well as brain injury.
  • Must possess working knowledge of how Art Therapy contributes to the rehabilitative process of acquired brain injury.
Education:
  • Registered as an Art Therapist by the Art Therapy Credentials Board as well as a master's in art therapy from an approved university.
Professional counselor license in the State of Michigan.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May be required to stand for extended periods. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
