About the Externship Yale New Haven Children's Hospital (YNHCH) invites passionate and driven audiology students to apply for our Pediatric Audiology Externship—a fast-paced, immersive experience designed to prepare you for a career in pediatric audiology. This externship offers a comprehensive clinical experience in both outpatient and inpatient pediatric audiology, with a focus on developing independence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and clinical excellence. Have a strong interest in pediatric audiology. Are eager to work in a dynamic, high-volume clinical environment. Are committed to developing the skills necessary to thrive in diverse pediatric settings.
Clinical Experience Includes:
Diagnostic Audiologic Evaluations for infants and children of all ages. Hearing Aid Evaluations and Fittings using evidence-based pediatric protocols. Cochlear Implant Evaluations, Programming, and Follow-Up.
Bone Anchored Hearing Devices:
assessment and management.
Electrophysiologic Testing:
ABR (natural sleep and sedated), OAE, and more. Newborn Hearing Screening Follow-Up. Inpatient Audiology Consultations in a collaborative, critical care setting. Supervision & Mentorship At YNHCH, our goal is to help you become a confident, independent pediatric audiologist. You'll receive: One-on-one mentorship from experienced pediatric audiologists. Exposure to a wide range of clinical scenarios and patient populations. Training in interdisciplinary collaboration with ENT, neonatology, speech-language pathology, and other specialties. Support in developing clinical decision-making and autonomy. YNHCH adheres to the Audiology Clinical Education Network (ACEN) timeline.

Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: Applicants should demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: Basic audiologic diagnostic testing including pure-tone audiometry, tympanometry, and acoustic reflexes. Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) testing and interpretation. A working knowledge of pediatric hearing aid selection, fitting, and verification using real-ear measures. Basic counseling skills for patients and families. Report writing and documentation in a clinical setting. Infection control and patient safety protocols. Professional communication with patients, caregivers, and interdisciplinary teams. Time management and clinical efficiency in a fast-paced environment. Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: During your externship at YNHCH, you will: Gain advanced skills in pediatric diagnostic audiology, including behavioral and objective testing across all developmental levels. Learn to manage complex hearing loss cases, including those requiring hearing aids, cochlear implants, and bone-anchored hearing systems. Develop expertise in electrophysiologic testing, including sedated and natural sleep ABRs. Participate in newborn hearing screening follow-up and early intervention coordination. Experience inpatient audiology consultations and learn how to provide care in critical and acute care settings. Build confidence in interdisciplinary collaboration with ENT, neonatology, speech-language pathology, and other pediatric specialties. Strengthen your clinical decision-making and autonomy through guided mentorship and increasing responsibility. Understand the workflow and demands of a high-volume pediatric hospital setting, preparing you for a variety of future work environments.
