The Audiology department at Rush University System for Health is pleased to offer an audiology externship opportunity for Doctor of Audiology (Au.

D) students seeking advanced clinical training in a dynamic academic medical center. The externship is primarily located at Rush's main campus in Chicago however the extern will rotate between 2 of our satellite locations throughout each term. These locations are at Oak Park and Oak Brook and are within 10-20 miles of the main campus in Chicago. These sites are also accessible via public transportation. This audiology externship provides qualified and motivated audiology doctoral students with an opportunity to experience the full scope of audiological practice in a diverse urban setting. The extern will spend three academic semesters training alongside practicing audiologists and participate in the care of a diverse patient population, with multiple etiologies, and challenging needs. The extern is not considered an independent practitioner of audiology, but a student finishing their training to gain competence, both clinically and personally. Supervision of externs is conducted by experienced audiologists with current Illinois state license and most have ASHA certification. The clinical staff abides by all state and federal mandates pertinent to audiology and patient care while maintaining a high level of professionalism. Our audiologists have had extensive precepting experience and excel at implementing ethical evidence-based practice in clinical assessment and treatment. Applicants must be Au.

D students in good academic standing and be eligible for their final externship year in 2027. Applicants should have completed a majority of their academic curriculum and have successfully completed practicum classes that encompass audiologic diagnosis and treatment with patients of all ages. Specifically, these experiences should have included significant exposure to behavioral and electrophysiological measures, amplification, audiologic rehabilitation, diagnosis and testing of vestibular disorders, and hearing screenings. Additional areas of exposure required to a lesser degree include hearing loss prevention, tinnitus management, and implantable solutions. Applicants should be self-sufficient, a team player, confident, and patient. Good problem-solving, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required. It is highly recommended that the applicant have passed a comprehensive national examination prior to beginning the externship. Universities must have a clinical affiliation agreement on file with RUSH prior to the student's start. The extern must possess professional liability insurance ($1,000,000 per incident and $3,000,000 aggregate).
