AUDIOLOGIST MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of license and registration by the New York State Education Department as an Audiologist.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Audiologist is responsible for the diagnostic evaluation of, and the provision of non-medical rehabilitative services for, auditory problems of students. The incumbent in this class determines range, nature and degree of hearing function related to students' auditory efficiency, using such instrumentation as pure tone and speech audiometers, and participates in conservation and rehabilitative programs including hearing aid orientation and auditory training. The work is performed under general supervision of the School Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent. This position does not involve supervision of others. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
(Illustrative only) Evaluates and identifies hearing disorders of students using various diagnostic procedures and electroacoustic instrumentation; Monitors auditory efficiency of students with known hearing loss; Provides pre- and post-otologic assessments of students; Coordinates audiometric results with other diagnostic data such as educational, medical, social and behavioral information; Conducts workshops and in-service programs on auditory conservation and rehabilitation programs including hearing aid orientation and auditory training; Maintains case records of students.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the principals and practices of audiology; good knowledge of methods and techniques of assessment, evaluation and analysis of the auditory process; good knowledge of the operation of electroacoustic instrumentation such as pure-tone and speech audiometers; skill in communicating with children; ability to accurately assess hearing disorders; ability to conduct workshops and in-service workshops related to auditory conservation and rehabilitative techniques and programs; ability to provide hearing aid orientation; ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with students, teachers, and other professionals; sensitivity; patience; physical condition commensurate with demands of the position.
