Job Description

University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center/Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital Department of Audiology offers two full time paid 4th year externships. The 52 week externship experiences will begin June 2027 through May 2028. The Department of Audiology provides comprehensive diagnostic and rehabilitative services to individuals throughout their lifespan. Our goal is to improve communication abilities of our patients. We adhere to UH's Mission, Vision and Values as well as ASHA's Code of Ethics and the Department of Audiology policies and procedures. All of our audiologists hold Certificate of Clinical Competence through ASHA. The externships offer comprehensive experiences in pediatric and adult diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology. Externs complete rotations at our main campus and at our clinical offsite locations. Externs will gain knowledge and experience in pediatric and neuro-otology clinics, craniofacial clinic, auditory evoked potentials (sedated and natural sleep ABR and ASSR), vestibular evaluation and rehabilitation (ECOG, oVEMP, cVEMP, VNG, VHIT, rotary chair, neurodiagnostic ABR), cochlear implant evaluation and programming, cochlear implant intraoperative monitoring/physiological measures (NRT/ECAP, ESRT, ECOG), hearing aids, osseo-integrated devices, bone conduction devices, newborn hearing screenings, and ototoxic monitoring. University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center/Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital will follow the ACEN timeline for applications and interview process. Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
  • Pure tone air and bone conduction threshold assessment with masking
  • Immittance audiometry with acoustic reflex and reflex decay
  • Knowledge of hearing aid selection, fitting and verification
  • Knowledge of real ear measurements
  • Knowledge of cochlear implant and BAI evaluation, selection and fitting Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
  • Universal Newborn Hearing Screening program and management
  • Intra-operative cochlear implant telemetry
  • Obtain complete and comprehensive audiogram with tympanometry, acoustic reflexes/reflex decay, otoacoustic emissions for all age groups
  • Comfort in use of BOA, VRA, TROCA, conditioned play audiometry and team testing
  • Competency in ABR and ASSR assessment and interpretation
  • Competency in vestibular assessment and interpretation including VNG, ECOG, oVEMP, cVEMP, rotary chair
