Job Description

The University of Washington Medical Center
  • Montlake Audiology Clinic is offering a full time AuD externship beginning June 2027 and ending June 2028!
As an extern with us, you'll gain hands-on experience working with a diverse adult and geriatric patient population in key areas of audiologic care, including: diagnostic evaluations hearing aids cochlear implants bone-anchored hearing devices (BAHDs) vestibular assessments You'll be actively involved in our weekly walk-in device clinics and hearing aid check-ins alongside our audiology assistants, and you'll assist with calibrating equipment and preparing sound booths at the start of the day.
Additional learning opportunities include:
Collaborating closely with audiologists, physicians, nurses, physician assistants, medical assistants, and audiology assistants Observing otologic surgeries Participating in manufacturer-led trainings on hearing aids and cochlear implants We're looking for motivated externs eager to learn in a dynamic university medical center environment where you will work with multiple preceptors and engage in meaningful interactions with patients and healthcare professionals across specialties. Externs with reliable transportation may also have the chance to rotate through one of our additional clinic locations for broader exposure. You will be expected to show progress over the course of the externship and receive at least passing grades on evaluations as determined by your graduate program and clinical preceptors.

10 Continuing education opportunities? Yes Externs are allowed time off for one professional conference during the externship (may be negotiable). Externs may also have opportunities to take part in manufacturer training sessions, program meetings, and Seminars in Hearing and Communication Sciences (SHACS) on UW campus.

  • Curiosity and willingness to learn and take part in new experiences Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
  • Full case history, focusing on relevant details
  • Critical thinking with audiometry, changing protocol based on individual patient factors
  • Improved report-writing skills

BAHA:
evaluating need for amplification, selecting appropriate devices, fitting using real ear verification, programming, troubleshooting, answering patient questions appropriately, anticipating potential needs of patient
  • Cochlear implants: evaluating candidacy for cochlear implantation, mapping, troubleshooting, counseling on realistic expectations, changing speaking/communication style to ensure patient understanding
  • Vestibular:
    Running and interpreting results of VEMP, rotational chair, VNG, posturography
  • Independence or near independence in skills listed above
  • Continued curiosity and desire for self-improvement in the field of Audiology
  • Independence in taking responsibilityfor one's learning
  • Counseling specialized to each patient

No The externs will be asked to present their AuD Capstone/research during one of our regular audiology meetings. Consortium or collaborative arrangements with other sites? No How frequently will the externship site communicate with the university during the externship? As Needed Communication or other support do expected or required from the university during the externship: We have traditionally split up the rotation into quarters and completed an evaluation at the end of each quarter, at which time we may check in with the university. We will also communicate with the university if any concerns arise.

If the university has any specific guidelines, student expectations/assignments, or requirements re: required hours or anything else, we will plan accordingly.
