Onsite / Local Candidates Preferred Job Overview We are seeking a motivated and safety-driven Safety Technician for a 13-week contract opportunity in Durham, NC. This role is ideal for candidates who are newly certified and eager to build a long-term career in Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Occupational Safety, or Environmental Science . The Safety Technician will support the collection, segregation, transportation, and management of hazardous waste materials generated across healthcare, research, laboratory, and facility environments while ensuring compliance with all applicable safety regulations. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, ambitious, detail-oriented, and committed to maintaining a strong culture of workplace safety. Key Responsibilities Collect, segregate, package, transport, and manage hazardous chemical waste across clinics, laboratories, healthcare, and research environments Assist with management of hazardous pharmaceutical, radiological, and universal waste materials Ensure compliance with all applicable OSHA, EPA, DOT, NRC, and RCRA regulations and standards Safely identify, segregate, and handle chemicals based on their properties for shipping, treatment, and disposal Maintain accurate records, reports, and compliance documentation using computer systems Operate a company-owned vehicle for collection and transportation activities Communicate effectively with leadership regarding safety procedures and compliance concerns Utilize proper PPE and respiratory protection when working in hazardous environments Maintain a safe work environment and follow all environmental and workplace safety protocols
Required Qualifications Education:
Associate's Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field ( highly preferred )
Experience:
1-3+ years of experience in EHS, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or related safety functions Newly certified candidates looking to start a career in Environmental Health & Safety are encouraged to apply Background in Environmental Science, Safety, or EHS preferred
DOT RCRA
Certification required Must possess a valid driver's license and be comfortable operating a company vehicle Required Knowledge & Skills Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to hazardous material management Basic understanding of chemistry and chemical properties for proper hazardous waste segregation and handling Ability to maintain records, generate reports, and use computer systems effectively Strong written and verbal communication skills Self-starter with strong attention to detail and commitment to safety principles Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and maneuver 400 lb. drums Must be physically capable of wearing respiratory protection equipment Comfortable working in a variety of environments, including office settings, high-heat conditions, and hazardous areas requiring protective gear
Pay:
$20.00•$24.00 per hour
