General Description:
Under the supervision of the Department Head of Cardiovascular Services or designee, performs and monitors all non-invasive vascular and cardiac imaging studies along with invasive echocardiographic procedures. Performs patient assessments, acquires and analyses data, and provides a summary of findings to the interpreting physician. Produces high quality diagnostic information to optimize patient care. Key Responsibilities:
Competent in performing patient assessment and evaluation including the gathering of relevant information regarding the patient's past and present health status prior to initiation of studies and procedures. Performs necessary support functions utilizing knowledge and understanding of the disease process while maintaining principles of infection control and safety.
Competent in performing and teaching others non-invasive vascular ultrasound procedures based on established standards. Includes extracranial cerebrovascular, peripheral arterial, peripheral venous studies and other vascular studies as ordered. Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of practice, as appropriate for all ages of patients served.
Competent in performing and teaching others non-invasive and invasive echocardiographic procedures based on established standards. Includes echocardiogram, stress echocardiogram with and without medications, transesophageal echocardiograms, and other echocardiographic studies as ordered. Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of practice, as appropriate for all ages of patients served.
Competent in providing evaluation of examination results including written and/or oral summaries of preliminary findings to the interpreting physician. Recognizes the need for urgent reporting of critical results and takes appropriate action.
Provides clear and precise documentation as necessary for continuity and accuracy of care. Completes electronic and paper documentation to ensure proper charging. Organizes and files reports as required.
Provides effective communication and education to the patient and/or family. Elicits patient cooperation and understanding of expectations. Presents explanations and instructions in a manner that can be easily understood by the patient and other health care providers.
Competent in processing equipment while following infection control procedures for all equipment used during echocardiogram and vascular testing and procedures.
Assist with quality assurance and continuous quality improvement methods to assess and evaluate all aspects of echocardiogram and vascular ultrasound practice. Works with all concerned parties to compare quality assurance results to established and acceptable values. Assists with formulation and implementation of action plans. Assists as requested in maintaining standards for JCAHO, Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) and Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL).
Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Formal Education:
Associate's Degree, AND or other Two Year College equivalent required.
Work Experience:
1 year to < 2 years preferred
Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
BCLS required through American Heart Association
Certification(s) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) and/or the Cardiovascular Credential International (CCI), preferred:
Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)
Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS)
Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)
Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS)
Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS)
Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT)
