Cath Lab Certified Surgical Technologist Department:

Cath Lab Job Function:

Assists interventional cardiologists and vascular surgeon during invasive cardiovascular and peripheral vascular procedures. Utilizing expert clinical skills, the CST creates and maintains a sterile field, prepares highly specialized endovascular hardware, and ensures patient safety through rigorous adherence to radiation and aseptic protocols.

Job Qualifications:

Education:

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.

Certification:

Active CST credential from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Current BLS and ACLS certifications. Minimum of 1 year of general OR scrub experience, though previous cardiovascular or cath lab experience is strongly preferred

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Sterile Scrubbing:

Establish and maintain the sterile field for procedures including angioplasties, stenting, pacemaker insertions, and structural heart interventions.

Device Preparation:

Prep, flush, and organize specialized guidewires, balloon catheters, stents, and sheaths according to physician preference.

Radiation Safety:

Employ radiation safety principles (ALARA), manage lead shielding, and handle fluoroscopic imaging equipment controls under physician direction.

Emergency Response:

Maintain a calm demeanor and immediately provide appropriate emergency instruments and devices during acute cardiac events or vessel perforations.

Inventory Control:

Track and restock high-value, specialized inventory including catheters, contrast media, and implantable devices.

On-Call Rotation:

Availability to participate in an on-call schedule, requiring arrival at the hospital within 30 minutes of notification. This job description is not an employment contract.
