May - August 2027 Full-Time (40 hours per week) Must be Enrolled in an Undergraduate, or any Academic Program This position is part of the through Xtern is for students who are enrolled in a University or College and is professional development experience on top of your full-time internship with IU Health. Xtern provides three weekends where you will connect with other interns in tech and tech adjacent roles at companies in the Indianapolis area. Xtern weekends focus on professional development, civic engagement, and social opportunities to grow your network. You will have access to an online community, bonus fun events, and an opportunity to compete to explore Indianapolis through the Xtern Passport program. The three weekend programming dates are June 4 & 5, June 25 & 26, July 23 & 24. 2027 Summer Internship Program Information Services (IS) What is Health Information Services, Technology? Health Information Technology (HIT) focuses on designing, building, using, and maintaining healthcare information systems. At IU Health Information Services, interns gain exposure to teams that support patients, clinical staff, operations, business solutions, and clinical research improve care delivery, and provide a broader understanding of healthcare technology across the organization. Our goal is to give you a deeper understanding of the IS team that best aligns with your interests, while providing broad exposure to Health Information Services across IU Health. Which Health Information Technology areas speaks to you?IS Operations:
Service Desk The Service Desk acts as the central point of contact for IT support, delivering first‑level assistance for technical issues and service requests. They assess each customer's inquiry, resolve what they can directly, and route more complex issues to the appropriate IT teams. Using documented processes, they handle common requests such as password resets and software or hardware needs, working to restore normal service as quickly as possible Beyond day‑to‑day troubleshooting, the Service Desk plays a key role in initiating Major Incident procedures and supporting Problem Management. They help identify recurring issues, analyze root causes, and detect trends that may lead to service disruptions. The team also coordinates communication during incidents—managing updates, escalations, and ensuring timely resolution—while contributing to proactive efforts that strengthen overall service stability IS Portfolio Management Clinical Applications and Research Portfolio Team The IS Clinical Applications & Research Portfolio Team provides project leadership and delivery oversight for clinical technology initiatives that support patient care, clinical operations, research, and organizational growth across IU Health. The team works closely with clinicians, operational leaders, informatics teams, vendors, and technical specialists to plan, implement, and optimize solutions that improve clinical workflows, enhance patient outcomes, and enable innovation across the health system This portfolio includes clinical applications, Epic-integrated technologies, research platforms, medical device integrations, virtual care solutions, ambulatory initiatives, and clinical technology deployments supporting new facilities and hospital expansions Through project and program delivery, the team manages medium and large-scale clinical and research technology initiatives, coordinating project planning, budgeting, risk management, implementation, testing, activation, and stabilization activities. Team members partner with clinical and operational stakeholders to ensure technology solutions align with patient care needs, support workflow optimization, and enable successful adoption across the organization The portfolio offers exposure to healthcare technology project management, clinical application implementations, Epic and integrated technology ecosystems, operational readiness, training, and go-live supportIS Business Solutions:
Enterprise Business Applications Supports "System Services" business areas (Finance, Human Resources, Supply Chain, Revenue Cycle etc.) Utilize technical skills to deliver and support applications. Roles include Systems Analysts, Developers, Solution Architects, System Administrators, etc. Support modules within major technology platforms including Oracle Fusion, CernerEMR, UKG

We bridge disciplines, connect stakeholders, and translate complex challenges into practical solutions that create meaningful impact for patients, caregivers, researchers, and the health system Areas of focus Clinical research data and workflow projects Research data analytics and ML Model building research Projects such as disease progression, outcomes, treatment patterns, etc. requiring technical skills (Python, SQL, R studio, etc.) Work with enterprise applications including: Databricks; Service Now; Epic EHR Evaluation and management of the IU Health AI portfolio Data governance and enablement Clinical Research Systems Research data analytics and ML Model building research Projects such as disease progression, outcomes, treatment patterns, etc. requiring technical skills (Python, SQL R studio, etc.) How can you help in the mission of IU Health's Information Services? Our IS / Information Services Interns are assigned to a specific functional area to include projects, initiatives and other significant tasks to gain hands-on experience with Information Services. Our IS interns collaborate with leaders and team members, participate in meetings, report on project progress, and support tasks such as data collection, project logistics, materials preparation, and cross-team communication. These assignments provide broad exposure to IS functions, healthcare industry knowledge, departmental concepts, and outcomes that support Informatics, Information Services, and department leaders.
