Job Summary:

The Building and Laboratory Safety Manager monitors activities and conducts regular inspections of working spaces and labs. Supervises and guides Building Coordinators to ensure that hazards are properly mitigated, and necessary maintenance, repairs, modifications, and deliveries are properly planned and scheduled. Oversees the development, review, and implementation of college-wide safety policies and procedures.

Additional Department Summary:

Works closely with College leadership with regard to laboratory safety, ensuring safe operation of laboratories, training spaces, and research equipment. Conducts safety walkthrough of research labs, teaching labs, student spaces, offices, communal areas, multidisciplinary spaces, and related facilities. Coordinates and oversees the development, review, and implementation of college-wide safety procedures. Assures compliance with University of Alabama Environment Health and Safety (UA-EHS) safety policies and protocols. Interacts with faculty, staff, and students, and requires independent judgement to take immediate corrective measures when safety violations are observed. Helps faculty, and directly submits project initiation requests, work orders, and attends required meetings related to lab renovations. Works with Departments chairs and investigators to ensure compliance with Environmental Health and Safety, and facilitates appropriate use of shared equipment. Collaborates with academic programs regarding their assigned spaces. Inspects teaching labs to ensure safety and compliance. Serves as the liaison between the Barefield College of Arts and Sciences faculty/staff and EHS, and helps to develop cost-effective hazard mitigation strategies for new projects or facilities and equipment.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of experience; OR master's degree and two (2) years of experience.

Skills and Knowledge:

Basic knowledge and understanding of typical university research lab safety requirements. Ability to create procedures that incorporate all requirements in coordination with EHS. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Self-motivated. Working knowledge in the usage of personal computers and standard application software (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Understanding and appreciation for laboratory and workplace safety. Ability to stay abreast of all safety and accreditation requirements for all the College's research, teaching, student projects, and other related labs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biological Sciences. Lab safety or lab research experience in a university setting.
