Job Description

Centered in beautiful Southern California, Adventist Health Simi Valley has been one of the area's leading healthcare providers since 1965. Simi Valley is a suburban area nestled between an urban oasis and the stunning shores of the Pacific Ocean. Bordering Los Angeles allows hiking in the morning and attending film premieres in the evening.
Job Summary:
Oversees the daily laboratory activity for all stat and routine laboratory testing and is able to perform the duties of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Is responsible for the personal and professional conduct of all personnel working in the laboratory and in the absence of the laboratory manager, coordinates standards for proficiency testing, Joint Commission and compliance with other regulatory agencies. Complies with operational budget, productivity, and acts as the Shift Supervisor. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned personnel using both professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment.

Education and Work Experience:
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Required Five years' clinical laboratory experience: Preferred Clinical Lab Scientist experience in hospital setting:
Preferred Licenses/Certifications:
Valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license in state of employment: Required in CA Current certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency for Labs (NCA): Preferred in
CA and HI Essential Functions:
Employs positive patient identification procedures by all laboratory staff to ensure the integrity of each specimen for pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical testing. Performs proper specimen collection (including phlebotomy procedures as necessary), labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage. Rotates as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist working in various laboratory departments as a technologist as the need arises in the laboratory. Develops and documents laboratory support policies and procedures, including phlebotomy handbook. Investigates laboratory issues related to departments assigned, identifying root causes and proposing changes that will prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Adheres to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other patient confidentiality guidelines and regulations. Supervises technologists, phlebotomists, processors and laboratory support staff. Provides ongoing training and support and periodic performance evaluations. Manages staff scheduling and fills in for all positions as needed. Provides training, guidelines, and performance evaluations. Monitors department attendance and tardiness. Counsels individuals as necessary. Assures competency of all shift personnel. Maintains quality control and ensures compliance with rules, regulations and accreditation requirements of regulatory agencies, including Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission (JC), AABB, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Manages and maintains technical policies and procedures of respective departments in accordance with regulatory agencies and hospital policies. Manages inventory of reagents, calibrators, controls and supplies. Keeps the laboratory stocked with required supplies, submitting weekly orders in a timely manner. Assists in the prompt ordering, completion and review of the proficiency survey for all areas of the Lab, including the bedside testing. Keeps records of all testing organized (i.e. proficiency submitted, reviewed, problems resolved). Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
