Job Description
A hospital in Ottumwa, IA is seeking a Director of Laboratory Services to lead and oversee all aspects of laboratory operations. This on-site leadership role is responsible for ensuring high-quality diagnostic services, regulatory compliance, and efficient laboratory performance across the organization. Position Overview The Director of Laboratory Services provides strategic and operational direction for the laboratory department, supporting both clinical and administrative functions. The role focuses on maintaining accurate, timely, and reliable diagnostic testing services while ensuring compliance with all applicable healthcare standards and regulations. This position requires strong independent decision-making, leadership capability, and the ability to manage operations in a fast-paced and highly regulated clinical environment. Key Responsibilities Lead daily operations of the laboratory department Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and quality standards Oversee laboratory staffing, workflow, and operational performance Develop and implement policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives Monitor laboratory metrics and drive process optimization Collaborate with physicians and hospital leadership to support patient care needs Manage budgets, resources, and operational planning Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and reliability of diagnostic testing services Support staff development, training, and performance management Prepare for and participate in audits and regulatory inspections Qualifications Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent required Degree in Medical Technology or a related scientific discipline preferred Hospital or reference laboratory experience required Strong critical thinking and decisive judgment required Ability to work independently in a high-pressure environment required Master's degree in a scientific discipline or MBA preferred Previous Director-level laboratory leadership experience preferred Benefits Medical, dental, and vision insurance Paid time off and holiday benefits Retirement savings program Continuing education and leadership development support Partial relocation assistance available for qualified candidates Opportunity to lead hospital-wide diagnostic services
