About Alpha Detect In this position, you will be joining an exciting early phase opportunity with a vibrant, financially supported, not-for-profit laboratory startup in The Research Triangle, NC dedicated to rare disease detection. The ideal candidate will be integral in supporting quality lab testing services to accelerate detection of the Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD) gene. Overview The Accessioning Team Lead handles receipt of clinical samples and input of patient information into Laboratory Information System (LIS) while providing day-to-day leadership within the Accessioning Department. This role oversees workflow coordination, quality systems, staff training, and advanced troubleshooting for LIS systems. The position supports CAP, CLIA and other regulatory compliance requirements for pre-analytical processes and partners closely with laboratory leadership to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant test results. Shift leadership, on-call coverage, and acting supervisory responsibilities may be required. This is an onsite position with a Monday-Friday first shift schedule. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Performs accessioning of patient samples, including dried blood spot cards, saliva swabs, and other specimens, in accordance with established procedures, regulatory standards, and competency requirements. Serves as team lead, including the coaching, supervision, and development of staff. Serves as a technical resource for accessioning performance, troubleshooting, and problem resolution. Supports daily operations by maintaining efficient workflows, prioritizing specimen processing, and ensuring appropriate staffing and shift coverage as required. Leads and participates in quality control, quality assurance, and performance improvement activities in compliance with CLIA, CAP, and institutional policies. Participates in competency assessments, inspection readiness activities, and ongoing quality monitoring initiatives. Writes, reviews, and maintains standard operating procedures (SOPs), verification documentation, quality records, and technical reports related to the accessioning department. Assists in the evaluation, verification, implementation, and documentation of new methodologies and technologies. Provides training, orientation, mentoring, and competency assessment for new employees and existing staff as assigned; serves as a preceptor when needed. Provides input into staff performance evaluations and supports ongoing professional development. Communicates technical information clearly and professionally with laboratory staff and stakeholders. Adheres to laboratory safety standards, infection control policies, PPE requirements, and patient confidentiality regulations (i.e. HIPPA). Participates in laboratory and organizational performance improvement initiatives. Performs other duties as directed by leadership
Education, Experience and Qualifications:
Associate degree or higher in a chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory technology At least 4 years' experience working in clinical sample accessioning, preferably in an independent reference lab Minimum 2 years prior leadership experience Working knowledge and application of Laboratory Information Systems Proficient with Microsoft Office applications Strong communication and organizational skills Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment while maintaining quality standards About Durham Durham, NC offers a unique mix of energy, culture, and livability that makes it an attractive place to live and work.
